Ed's VH1 neck spec

... the VH #1-era neck 'NEVER' had a Floyd Rose nut attached to it. The original Black & Yellow "Bumblebee" didn't have a Floyd either... & its Charvel headstock was painted black...

The Kramer "beak" headstock neck was a bit wider & the Floyd nut/clamp was smaller...

... dunno which manufacturer's neck (22 frets!!) this is but the Floyd nut fits...

Tom Anderson worked on Ed's guitar and fabricated a neck to fit the oversized pocket. He said it was .05" bigger, so that's about right, according to the info already mentioned. Floyds were generally a 1 5/8ths nut on a 1 11/16ths neck so the strings weren't that close to the edge. As far as a narrow brass nut on the wide Frank neck... maybe, but those pics show the high E crazy close to the edge of the board...almost falling off. I can't even imagine playing that guitar w/o problems. He did it though. Which brings us to the main point. He used junk and produced sounds obviously felt for decades afterwards and had perhaps the most sought-after tone in history. An old 220v British Marshall, using a variac (bone stock) and guitars of quality you might find in a sleazy pawn shop were all he needed. It's technique, not gear.

I'd much rather play a Wolfgang... the new amps? Not so much.

The VH1 neck did have a Floyd nut on it. There is a photo of it off the guitar. You can see it slotted for one. I'd look for it, but I have a hangover. SGMAD.

I don't have the pic handy but I think he ruined the vh1 neck trying to slot it for the locking nut.

The handmade FR nuts were made to fit whichever guitar was sent to him for installation. Floyd sized the nuts accordingly to the neck sizes he was recieving. Not the other way around. Finally, when Fernandes then Schaller began factory production they made standard sizes. The Franky original neck was a 1 3/4 nut and 2 1/4 heel.

Early Charvel neck heels were 2 3/16 in general with stratheads pointy heads were 2 1/4. But Charvel would make anything the customer wanted. For example Warren Dimaritni would order a 2 inch nut with a 2 1/2 heel.
