Outta Space

Post by dirtycooter » Tue Feb 21, 2012 7:10 am

Anyone get the vibe that this tune is a shoot off or predates VH1's On Fire??? It seems to have the general same notes and chords but in a different rifff and phrasing. Am i the only one to think this? I hated this song at first, but now I hear the old VH brimming with very vintage spirit here. Its just like Shes the Woman sounds like a derivative of a mean street riff as well.

I remember when AC/DC followed up "Back In Black" with the old 1976 unreleased "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" in the early '80's. The fans ate it up. Van Halen have similiarly unearthed their own golden time capsule. Those who criticise this move (Sammy and his ilk) miss the point:

"Everybody Wants Some (More)! I Want Some (More) too....! Everybody Wants Some, Sammy- 'cept for You...!" :D :vh:

While waiting for this release I made the comment to a friend whom I was introducing the Warner Demo boot to that there was at least half a record of unpublished music right there and my hope was that they cut the best songs again and pump them out. Let's Get Rockin' was my favorite of those, and I think the Outta Space recut is fuckin' awesome. So I'm on the other end of the stick from people who indict the record for being old music. In fact, I like the recuts of everything better (gasp, blaspheme!) than the Warner Demos.
Interpretation?! I thought I was playing it right!

The original bridge section of She's The Woman was used in another tune on Fair Warning (can't remember which one of the top of my head).
The main riff of She's The Woman is also very similar to that of I'm The One, just slower.

The original bridge of She's the Woman became the bridge of Mean Street. The new bridge for She's the Woman is lifted from a Van Halen III song as another poster picked up on. Can't remember who said it or which song he attributed it to.
Interpretation?! I thought I was playing it right!

... and Mean Street used to be Voodoo Queen and had a different bridge! :palm:

There are a lot of VH tunes that use some of the same notes. I think that it shows me how creative Ed can be by taking the same 4-5 notes and changing tempo, swing, etc.

It's funny how Ed used the Ace Frehley chord in a lot of the demo tunes. Outta space is one of the few tunes that you can really hear the sound of the 5150 III on the opening riff. It sure is saturated.

Outta space instantly reminded me of mean streets because of a real subtle pull off going that is just like mean sts.

I really like the 'reworked' version of Lets Get Rockin' (Outta Space). Dave improved his vocal performance, compared to the original and his lyrics are AMAZING. Very engaging tune. I notice that Van Halen isnt performing this one live. You can tell that Dave REALLY gave it everything he had vocal/range/power wise, considering what he has left vocally (hey, he smoked/s alot of pot over the yrs. This really hurts the vocal chords). This one would be hard for Dave live.

Considering how this 'NEW' Van Halen is sorta divergent, with seperate website listings (DLR and Van Halen), the using of several older tunes is very understandable. The fans want to hear that early spirit again ('78-'84), and if post DLR era stuff was used, then that might not sit real well with such a coveted 'Reunion' album.

'Blood & Fire' is a new tune that has that 'chemestry' though. I really like this new album
Rip Ben Wise (StuntDouble) & Mark Abrahamian (Rockstah)

I'm looking forward to a good audio boot from the tour without all the studio gloss of songs like Bullethead etc. that will be a shade like the good old days (I did say 'shade' btw  ).
