Metro-Friedman "plexi" ready to go!

After a few final tweaks and some critical listening the Metro-Friedman plexi collaboration amp is available to order.

The jist of the amp is:

aggressive plexi that begs to be dimed and retains detail at this setting

voiced for "brown" tones but also covers all the tones from '68 era and up Superleads

includes a 3 way power switch for OFF / ON NORMAL / ON VARIAC

the variac setting simply drops all the voltages in the amp, like an external variac set to 90V AC

6CA7 output tubes

1968 era specs

Price is $3,200 USD

The amps are assembled here at Metro. I should be able to start shipping in 3-4 weeks. Contact me for more info and ordering: sales@metroamp.com

In the LA area you can stop in Tone Merchants in North Hollywood for a demo.

Hope to have some clips from the ap show soon. My recorder was packed with all the gear that shipped back here on a pallet, due to arrive tomorrow.

Thanks Mike!

This seems to be a very similar amp to the Suhr SL68. And I beleive both are around the same cost to buy. What are the main differences?

Is it only available with 120v or do you have 230v as well? I guess you need more primaries because of the variac thing

It is available wired for 230V operation, including the variac function.

George,

This may be a redundant question but...if we own a Metropoulos built 12 series plexi replica and we use the recommended 6CA7 outputs and drop the input voltage the amp sees to 90 volts can we expect to get the same results tonally or is there more to it (i.e.: component changes)?

The UA (Ultimate Attenuator) I am using has a 90v AC service outlet. I have used this with your 12 Series amp (with the virtual variac switch on the high (full) voltage switch setting) and it does wonders to the tone and feel.

So if I happen to grab a quad of 6CA7's (EH brand) in replace the EL34's, am I then all the way there to what a Metro-Friedman amp would offer?

Cheers!

That would be close. I'm giving away the whole formula, but the negative feedback and some values and types of components are different.

I was assuming this was probably the "Friedman Spec" that's been posted here, with internal Variac option. From what I can gather, both Friedman and Suhr have worked on Ed's amp and this looks like both have decided recently to put out their take on that?

No, you're fine-tuning the whole amp. people won't get the same result by just changing some values

Hey George, if we already own one of your 68 plexis, can we send it in and have you mod it to these specs? Also, what 6CA7 tubes are you using?
