Thanks George! I just reread my post and realized i made a mistake in what i wrote. I typed '500' instead of 400 volts for the VH tone, Oops. So if i had it set to the 400 volt setting and THEN still added my variac, would that be going rediculously too low?VelvetGeorge wrote:I love the way your mind works!
The 400V setting is the virtual variac setting. And since the heaters are working normally at 6.3V you could variac the amp down to the typical 90 volt range.
At 30% lower input the B+ would drop to just under 300 volts!
The only issue would be that the preamp voltage would now be so low that you would have very little linear operating range. Resulting in lots of distortion. Whether it's the good kind of distortion is up to you.
Bottom line, yes this would work.
