This is a question that could go in one of several forums, so I thought I'd post it here. There are several "disadvantages" to the JTM45, and several qualities that differentiate it from the bass JMP. I'm wondering if anyone has tried the following, or has any comments on it:
What are your thoughts on an amp with the power of a JTM45 (i.e., 30-35 watts), running kt66 power tubes, but with "all" the rest of the specs of the JMP bass. I put "all" in quotation marks because there will have to be changes based upon the lower wattage and use of kt66 tubes. This would use solid state rectification.
thanks.

Re: lower wattage superbass w/ kt66?
Your question is an odd one.
Do you want a bass spec JTM45 with KT66s and SS rectifier?
There are lots of variables (the JMP 50w amps varied over time anyway, earliest bass amps were identical and later ones a bit more filtering but that is pretty much it) so you need to be specific about what you want/need and like.

"Do you want a bass spec JTM45 with KT66s and SS rectifier?"
I think so. I'll try to be more clear. It is my understanding that in the progression from JTM45 to JMP Bass, there were several variations of each amp type. The evolution from JTM-45 to to JMP bass included changes in power supply (including tube to SS rectifier), filtering and OT impedance changes to accommodate el-34s.
I like the idea of the JMP bass (50 and 100 watts). What I don't like, is the idea of of it being so powerful. For my needs, one of the power of a JTM45 would be ideal. So, what I'm wondering, is how things might turn out with the above specs. I would assume that the two primary effects of using kt66 rather than el34 tubes would be to lower the wattage of the amp, and also to change the tone ONLY as a result of the different curves of the kt66 vs the el34. Is this right, or am I missing something?
As I've been thinking about this, I'm leaning toward a 6l6. Same questions apply, though.
