Newb

Ok guys I have lurked for some time and recently joined, and I am and have been wanting to build a kit. I am needing some recommendations on what to get. I am wanting to go with a single channel kit and build it to stock specs and then go crazy with it. I really like my gain and always like to have more than what I need and turn the knob down, sounds better to me this way. I was thinking a 20 watt kit and wire it up as a 2204, and the. Add an extra tube for the gain.

Thanks for the recommendations, and thus is the best forum for the type of stuff we all love.

Hey!

Welcome to the Forum!
Surprised no one has got back to you on this question but still!

I don't know too much about kits, but you should be ok with buying any 20w kit and then changing the preamp to be a 4-gain-stage 2203/ 2204. Your only changing the pre-amp stages so you can leave the 20w power stage and then go straight for the 2204 preamp mod. 4 gain stages will give you plenty of gain, it should be a really nice project to mess around with!

If your fixed on the extra pre-amp valve, make sure the chassis has room for it, when I was looking for more gain in my 2204 build, I had to use the 2nd pre-amp valve as a extra stage, getting rid of the cathode follower because my chassis didn't have room for the extra valve. I love the sound, but some people don't.. Sorta down to personal preference really :)

I guess where to buy the kit is dependent on where you live and how much you want to spend! - I have no idea on kits though as my build was from scratch! Plenty of kit sites out there though! :)

Hope this helps!
Si

I'm kinda surprised too. I'm gonna do a scratch built at my leisure. But yeah it's gonna be a 2204 pre section.

Part of the reason is that most of us build A/B push pull amps rather than single enders and a lot only build kits not freestyle. Beginners section is not where one would expect to start.

Best subsection for unusual or experimental builds is the DIY or other makes part. 8)
