3-4 tube heads into 1 cab

Post by rtcook » Mon Sep 14, 2009 9:09 pm

Is is possible to wire 3-4 tube heads into 1 cab? I already have the input switcher for 4 amps, but don't know how to handle the cabs.

Thanks,

Roger

Simultaneously or switchable? I have a tonebone that allows me to run two at once but not at the same time...

Not simultaneously. I will only run one amp at a time. I just want to be able to switch heads to the same cab without having to change cords from the amp to the cab.

Thanks,

Roger

you could to more heads by adding several switchers

I've seen those and other designs. They are expensive. I know there has to be a simple reason as to why you cannot just plug all ouputs of the amps into one cab threw multiple jacks in series. I realize there would be an issue if more than one amp was on at a time. But, why would it not work if only one amp was on at a time? Is there a load/resistance on the cab or the amp that is on from the others that are off? Must be something with the ohmage. Can someone explain? Seems to be alot of hardware in those switcher boxes just to accomplish switching two head between one cab.

Thanks,

Roger

Yes because you would be loading the inputs with the circuitry of all the other amps inputs to the amp that you want to run.

The 1 meg ohm resistors of the amps would be combined into the one you are running.

Why would you need to run more than two amps at once anyway?

Mesa have a multiple head switcher that's not generally publicised. I don't know whether it's a special order or whether it's discontinued but that might be a possibility.

CAE have also just made some custom ones for Carlos Santana and are about to make production versions from what I believe. John Suhr posted something about it over at HRI.

There was also the Axess Electronics head switcher that was supposed to be really good and got discontinued, but they mentions on their revised website that they might be bringing back a favourite old product, so that might also be a possibility.

I can't understand why they're not more common, and I'd really like one too. The big problem seems to have been tails on digital delays and blowing up the low power dummy load resistor that some devices have suffered from in the past.

There's got to be a way to do this. The others have. I'm gonna have to work on this a little more. It's a simple idea that seems to not have a simple solution.
