Master Volume Instructions

Post by hymoon » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:11 am

I'm building a Master Volume kit with Mercury Magnet transformers. I have several questions:

1) Since the instructions are geared toward the Metro Transformer color codings, it would be very helpful to know the exact voltages on this transformer so they could be easily mapped them to the Mercury color coding.

2) Step 15, page 19: The instructions say to wire the resistor to pin #8 but the picture shows pin #7, which is correct?

Thanks in advance.

1) I did a drawing for one Merc PT wiring, so if that is not in instructions now, let me know the PT you have. I'll send you the pic if it applies or describe which wire is which if not.

2) Should go just like the picture to pin #7. Just a typo with the #8 thing there.

The power transformer I have is the

ToneClone MP-100-460 from Mercury Magnets.

Thanks again.

A few more questions:

1) The instructions refer to a Board wiring diagram (step 27, page 31):
"Reference the photos on this page and the BOARD WIRING
DIAGRAM in the APPENDIX for correct wire color, length and connections."
This page appears to be missing! There are pages showing the components
and one showing the bus wiring. No board wiring diagram indicating colors
and lengths.

2) The power transformer information I'm looking for is a simple matrix
of wire color correspondence:
1203-80-MS MP-100-460 Value
orange orange common
red red 120v
blue blue 220v
violet violet 240v
red blue/white
blue/red brown
red/yellow yellow 0v B+
blue/red brown
red gray
blue green 93v
blue white 93v
green black 6.3v
green/yellow green 0
green black 6.3v

Please make any corrections and fill in the blanks.

A couple further notes about the Mercury Magnet Power transformer:
1) The mounting tabs on transformer do not match the holes in the
chassis requiring a couple new holes to be drilled in the chassis.
2) The orientation of the wires coming out of the transformer do not
match those coming out of the Metro PT. Consequently, it is not possible
to route the wires through the grommets as indicated in the instructions.
3) Note that there are 2 greens in the MM PT. I'm sure it would be bad news
to get them mixed up. How to tell which is which? One comes out of the
side of transformer with the wall power voltages.
4) The wire color correspondence difficulties noted above.

As a novice builder, had I known of these difficulties beforehand, I
would have opted for the stock transformer. Alternatively, a section
in the instructions about installing and wiring the MM PT would have
been helpful.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1) That is a pic I know George is aware of that needs to be added. Was thinking it was probably already in the latest instruction revision by now, but I guess it hasn't added or drawn yet. So I don't not have that pic or know what lengths to spec for everything, but the wire colors you can see from the pre final install board pics, layout and such, which should also give you a general idea as to length.

Sorry I don't have specific on the lengths, I 'm sure that pic will be added, but usually George adds a lot of extra wire in his kits, so if in doubt leave wires longer until hookup.

2) Since specs change over time, does the following link match your PT data here: MM 460 PT? If so, the drawing at the link HERE is what I drew for George regarding that PT. Should be how things look at step 12 and answer your questions regarding orientation, green wires, and such.

So to correct your list:

1203-80-MS________ MP-100-460
orange____________ orange common
red _______________ red 120v
blue ______________ blue 220v
violet _____________ violet 240v
red _______________ blue/white
blue/red ___________ NOT AVAILABLE/APPLICABLE
red/yellow__________ yellow high voltage CT
blue/red ___________ NOT AVAILABLE/APPLICABLE
red _______________ gray
blue ______________ green 93v
blue ______________ white 93v
green _____________ black 6.3v
green/yellow_______ green Heater CT
green _____________ black 6.3v

Very sorry for the delay. I'm uploading the new instructions now and will send you a link to download.
Even at reduced resolution, the pdf file is over 45megs. Will you be able to download a file that large?

I tried to include all the MM options instructions in the instructions. But I had over-looked adding the diagram in the appendix.
Thanks for jumping in to help with this Steve.

I've completed the wiring and started on the testing section. The heater pins on the tubes test as indicated however only V6 and V7 light up the others appear dead. Ideas? Also, the grid pin 5 on V4 and V5 appear dead - no signal, V6 and V7 appear to be ok. Ideas?

As the heaters are in parallel i fyou have a dodgy soldered joint or miswire anything downstream will not work. = dodgy joint on V6 heater connections

1) All the heater pins on all the tube sockets test with the correct
voltage, 3.1V +- 0.05, however only V6 and V7 show any sign
of life - light up and glow. All the solder joints are solid and on the correct
pin. I would have thought that with voltage on the pin that the tube would light up. Any
ideas?
2) The voltages on the far right of the board are correct - both 180VAC. However
the voltages on the diodes next door are 0 and should be +-480VDC. Any ideas?
3) The 6550's have no pin #6. Should these tubes/sockets be wired
differently somehow?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
