Is it possible to build a 68 plexi Metro 12xxx?

Post by Goonies » Tue Dec 23, 2014 7:51 pm

Hi,

I want to build a Metro 12xxx, where is the manual? i found this topics and a good METROAMP 100 WATT PLEXI KIT PDF manual, but i did not found the same PDF for the metro 12xxx. I really want to build the 68 era.

Is it possible to build a 12xxx with this informations below?

Of course it is possible to build a 12 series (68 spec) Metroamp Superlead.

- if you can read a schematic and undestand the build layouts and keep posting pics on the 12 series build section

- if you are a beginner I suggest you make sure your wires are stock Marshall colours, that the wires for turrets are post 69 style with them pushed up through the holes in the board and wrapped around the turret, wire your bus wire above the board. You can out them under the board like early amps but helping out with wiring mistakes if you do it that way is really difficult over the net.

- you can use other transformers if you want, but again non-stock colours and arrangements are really hard to help with, I suggest, Metro, Marstran or from the Dark Side of 'he who must not be named'

All those links are definitely must haves...It looks like you did your research already,....and great advise from Neil. Start a thread down in the 12 Series Journal section and post pics of your progress. Also, go through some of those threads for examples of great wire dress. Night Owl made a nice pictorial how to for the 12xxx:

Here is MightyMikes GIF showing the super bass layout:

Once the amp is done there will be plenty of guys who can help with fine tuning the tone.

i saw NIght Owl topic, it´s great.

The PDF for 100W kit is´s fantastic, i wish had some for the 68 era. I need help step by step even for a filaments wires, socket connections, everything.

Do you think a beginner can build a 68?

Is it possible to change the socket amphenol to a cheaper? $17 each is very expensive,

thanks

Ha ha, I made a large printout of George's 68 build chassis pic and have it on my shop wall, it's art! MightyMikes pdf is pretty much what a 12series looks like except for about four little caps and a resistor. Just compare it to Billy Batz pdf that you linked to. Start familiarizing yourself with the values, a good place to start is the simple differences between a bass and a lead circuits. But the best way to do this is just to get started and take it slowly. Oh, and yes, just go with the Micalex sockets. Robert at ValveStorm has a batch of 12series chassis that fit those just fine, just specify. You don't need the tube retainers and just go with newer production parts for now. Check out this thread that George posted for best location of carbon comp resistors and use carbon film for the rest:http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=16794
If this project is too much to tackle, grab an old ValveJunior off eBay and grab a plexi conversion kit and go at it. You'll learn allot. Still, you can easily do a 68 if you take your time.

Collated all of the pics and instructions from Night Owl here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/uj79s ... ghtOwl.zip
AND
I just got a new batch of the newer version of the 12series chassis that can use the less expensive Belton sockets:

Also, be sure to get the Double-D fuseholders for the new chassis.

Strat78,

This is a very good video from Germino. Thanks!

these construction details are very important for beginners.

a short and simple video. Should have more videos like this explaining the basics of a building. This greatly encourages the assembly itself.
