Hi, Newby here, few beginner questions.

Post by Thebloosman78 » Tue Oct 30, 2012 10:30 am

Hi all, I am new to the metro forums here so I have a few questions.
All of my posts will be regarding my 1989 first edition re-issue marshall bluesbreaker combo, and all related questions will be for mods etc. hopefully you guys can direct me accordingly??
I recently had the amp modded with the PPI MV which was really good, it is very usable, great sound and excellent for my needs, but recently I had modded the amp with all new sprague caps and mica caps for subtle tonal changes etc, I followed all recommendations from the "raw sewage" pages for the bluesbreaker to help get that early Clapton tone but to no avail! I am using standard stock greenbacks, but I changed out the valves from TAD 5881's for JJ 6L6 's and re-biased accordingly, but now the amp sounds cold, lifeless, a definite power/output drop in volume, I am now left scratching my head as I don't know where to revert to or where to begin....please can anyone help me diagnose the apparent problems and get me back to this amp to complete my upgrade??
I am more than happy to discuss the amp and what I've done etc.
I hope someone can help??

Thanks guys. ;-)

I think you need to post this question in the "Other Amplifiers" thread. I dont know the answers to your questions, but Im sure someone there can help you... this particular thread doesnt see much action.

Generally for Clapton tones I would be using KT66 output valves, certainly not 6L6s(edited from KT66s). Presume the valves were biased properly.

How far did the mods go (ie lowered filtering)?

Post some pics of what you have and list what you were told had been done.

There are plenty of subtle ways to mod a JTM45/BB to get Clapton tones you seek.

I'm presuming that Neil means, certainly not 6L6's.

And yes, I would concur that 6L6's are a total step in the wrong direction. Cleaner, punchier, colder, for certain. I'd have rather kept the 5881's myself (if indeed they are a true 5881). But yes, KT66's are going to be closer than all other options.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

83.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot!
