Help a Beginner

Post by hebron1427 » Wed Jul 18, 2012 11:39 am

Hey everyone,

I got turned on to this forum by one of my best friends. My friend was the brother of the guy you all know as stuntdouble (ben wise). Ben was a great guy and, apparently, very involved in building plexis. I've played guitar on and off for almost 15 years now, and I have an engineering degree, but I never really got into amps. Ben's brother asked if I could help him build up some of those amps ben was working on because I understand electronics.

My problem is that I really dont have any clue how all the stuff goes together and how changing aspects of it affects sound. i'm planning to spend a good amount of time on this forum just reading and trying to learn, but if anyone can help me fast track this effort, it would be appreciated. I'm expecting i'll need at least 500 hours of learning time before i have any idea what i'm doing, but i have a wife and two kids (not to mention a job), so i want to maximize my limited free time on this.

thanks to everyone for your help.

You'll find the amp kit build instructions here in the metroamp wiki (links at top of page) will have a lot of the info you'll need. Half the battle is identifying what amps and parts (especially the transformers) that you have. The rest will come when you ask the right questions, although I suspect at this stage you won't know what to ask.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

thanks for the reply. you are definitely correct. i've been a contributor to other forums on various subjects and have foudn the information on those to be extremely valuable and better than could've been gained from simply researching the topic. however, i also see that asking the right questions is key. i'm just trying to get enough knowledge to know what i'm talking about. i'll take a look at some of the instructions and, hopefully, it will help put me on the right path. many thanks.

Good luck btw. You should hopefully find all the answers you need with the people left here. :D

How many amps are left unbuilt/part built?
