I'm Pleased to come to site where everyone is helping everyone get a better grasp on amps and etc. Thanks for the time george that you spent and the other people involved. To you I am eternely greatful.... :D
My objective is to obtain VH1 tone. I read that the 67/68 kit is the same as the 12 series head EVH used. Is there anything that I should know before I buy the kit. Maybe I would be better off piecing the kit together slowly and just buying the 67/68 barebones set up with the 500/400 volt OT and choke they offer. I could use a hand as Im not sure what to do?

I would buy the full kit.
If you are not experienced in scratch building an amp it can be rather frustrating to source your own parts.
Not to mention the multiple shipping charges because most likely you will have to buy from several different vendors.

Build the 12000 series, then read the EVH section about what guys are doing achieve that tone.

Most likely it will be a few cap and resistor changes.

But first, get the amp built and make sure it works before tweaking it.
You never know, you may be satisfied with the tone you get right away.

I'm not a real EVH fanatic but there seems to be some confusion about what all Eddie did to his amps and different periods of time about what he used when.
A lot of disinformation out there, but it seems a few in that section can get close enough to satisfy them.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

Thanks for your input Tom I really appricaite it.The whole reason why I ask Is because I don't have all the cash for the 12 kit. I have half. I figured if I get the chasis, OT and PT and the Choke its a start. I at least started in on the project you know what I mean :idea: Thanks for you help greatly needed.................

Hey there, tone chaser! And welcome!

So your planning on building as money comes in. It is like building a chopper. Pretty cool. But I see and understand what Structo is pointing at. It is easier to build up an amp and from there start tweaking. Because tweaking you will have to, if you aiming for VH1.
There are different ways of getting there. One is what you are thinking of. Barebone kit and build from there. If you do I would recommend looking at, and digest "Calling Rockstah" http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11549" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It is a long thread but you may start at the end and find what vkaxeman ended up with as far as components goes.
If you are going to order the barebone I would in addition ask for some black and red wire for the heater (maybe all the wire you need for the whole amp if the price fits you), all tube sockets and the LarMar kit (8 dollars - you will probably need it). This way you can finnish the heater and some of the wires from the transformers.

Whatever you choose; have a Ball!!

I don't know allot, but I have built a number of projects in electronics in high school so I believe with YOUR GUYS HELPING I CAN do this. Im going to order what you have suggested. what gauge wire? Do they offer a whole amp kit or wire? After I order what you have stated Omn, what should I buy next? What order? Thanks ahead of time for you support guys! Most common wire is 22ga, 600v if I remember correctly. Some 18ga and 22ga buss wires.
The 12xxx does not have an instruction. There is a lot of work gathering all the information you will need. You will feel overwhelmed. Without a complete kit that feeling will be multiplied. Because you have a search for components running in the back.
I would probably have started on populating the boards after the initial wires are done. The boards can then be stored for later.
What I would suggest is that you start reading the forum.
1) Searching for "12xxx build", "12xxx pictures", "12xxx step by step" and so on.
2) Go to Wiki - Amp instructions, and download all instructions. This will be your bed-literature the next weeks. And none are really your build :) The reason I still recommend it is that they all have parts that you may take with you. And you get a feeling for how it is done.
3) You need layouts. Some are found on the CD that comes with the barebone kit. And SDM has one (even though it does not have the same power section as your build will have; it is absolute GREAT for 12xxx).
http://home.comcast.net/~jbjdav26/1959/ ... 0grids.JPG" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You may also like the rest of his site; great one
http://home.comcast.net/~mamp17/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
4) With all this digested take a new look at what vkaxeman ended up with http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php ... &start=705" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And take notice as how the tone was achived by reading the thread...a LOT of pages (I never got through them all...). I think he was slaving amps for that sound. That means another amp :)
It is a long walk. And will cost.
So what would I do?
Just get the barebone plus wires and tube sockets. And worry not for the struggle up ahead. Small steps.

No, sir.
Populate the boards as money allows. When finished with the boards just leave them untill later. They will go in to the amp pretty late in the build, as you will see in the instructions of other types of kits.
The forum are to be used whenever...
