help with 67 clone

Post by david_h » Wed Jun 03, 2009 4:29 pm

hello.

ok so ive been up and down the fourms searching and learning how these things work and how to build them. i was going to go with a kit,
but then i saw the plexireplicas.com site and wanted to buy one of those but dont have the money. so then i thought of building one. I want to build an early 1967 clone. i haven't found much on people building these, but a few layouts and a parts list http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2978" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but im still confused on a couple things. the last things mentioned are:
* (29) 1/2 watt resistors - see diagram. I dont know what diagram it's talking about. do i just look off one of the board layouts and get them or could i get by with buying the component kit? which resistors do i get?

are the 67 and 68 main boards wired the same?

also what is the difference between all of the different types of resistors? carbon composite, metal oxide, carbon film? if they each had the same values, would they work the same? or are the only differences quality?

what is the difference between the 6vac and 120vac lamps? which should go into this build?

furthermore what is the difference between F&T 30uF @ 500V Axial and F&T 32uf x 32uf @ 500V
they are both close in value right which means they should be the same? but one looks like all the leads are on one end, like a plug, and on the other the leads are on both ends, as in a resistor?

this is my first amp and i think i could do this with out the step by step instructions and just going off of these good layouts and pictures and the forums, but is there a certian way/general steps to put these together? for example would one wire up the main board first, then install the transformers, and then move on to something else?

does the head case come with a metro amp logo on it? if not where can i buy one of those metroamp logos? (credit needs to be given where credit is deserved)

is there anything else i would need to know to build one of these 1967 clones that isn't on here?

sorry for all of these questions, i'm really looking forward to building one of these and thanks for your time.

Your easiest solution is to head to this link:

http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=351" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Go down to "Options" and select "Complete '68 spec kit."

It's got the right trannies, boards and components to do the job with only a couple of exceptions. If, when you order, Metro doesn't do a "Super Bass" option on this kit (a '67 Lead is the same as a Super Bass with two additional capacitors) then you'll need to purchase a couple of .1uF caps to substitute for .022uF caps. The kit should have a CD with the '67 layouts you need to set the board up and make the correct substitutions. (If by chance the CD isn't there, just ask!!!)

The only downside is no actual step-by-step instructions for this kit. But the layouts are pretty damn complete, so that between them and the standard 100-watt instructions you can get the job done. There are also a number of complete build threads here with some searching that have lots of helpful pictures.

Ok, I will try to help.

I presume that by '67 you mean the late '67 amp (JMP100) http://amparchives.com/album/Marshall/1 ... index.html or http://amparchives.com/album/Marshall/1 ... index.htmlas opposed to early '67 (JTM100 Black Flaghttp://s76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/ne ... ck%20Flag/). Both of these amps are very similar but subtle differences as to how you build them and from what core parts (mainly the filter boards and rectifier).

The circuit boards on both are identical - shared cathode on V1, 0.022uF coupling caps (except for the phase inverter (as Flames said) which are 0.1uF. Key points are the 56k/250pF tone stack, 27k NFB resistor.
I would use:
Metro Drake 1202-132 2" tranny http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=209
Choke would be this:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=263
and power tranny this:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=457

I would suggest you get this:
http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=351
and you can specify the above trannies, with or without the dual secondary power transformer option (simpler without).
You will need one of these:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=438 and maybe one of these:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=486 if you are going for vintage style.
You will need this:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... ucts_id=39 as it is easy to wire to your PT directly if it has lugs or the tube socket with heaters if not.
These:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=455
thishttp://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=265 two of thesehttp://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=354 and two of these:http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=479

You would also need the selectors (I put both output and voltage selectors on mine for flexibility)http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... ucts_id=31 and http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... ucts_id=95 and two of these: http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... ucts_id=85 don't forget this: http://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... cts_id=284

That will go a long way (you will also need 6 jack sockets of coursehttp://metroamp.com/store/product_info. ... ucts_id=42).

I generally put all the valve sockets and trannies in first, get the heaters and output valves all wired up, then add the pots, output jacks and fuses in next. I build the boards by doing the under board bus wire first, add the wires that go off the board (all slightly longer than needed) and add the components so that the board just drops in (making sure no wires/links have fallen out during adding the components - my only disagreement with the kit assembly instructions :wink:
Then you hook all the wires up to the sockets, pots etc with the shortest non tensioned routes (lots of examples of tidy wiring here).

If you look at the layouts, schematics and the kit instructions you will be fine 8)
