Is that your amp or James'? Sounds killer to me....I agree with what all the guys have said. 100uf PI cap helped mine quite a bit to get rid of the flubby bass. Not sure if I have 2.7k or 820 on V1B at this point. Been so pleased with mine, I haven't taken it out of the case lately.

Also, the tubes...Sylvania 12ax7WA is a key for me with the Sylvania 6CA7s.

That was my amp using his slave setup.. :) james is awesome. He and I got together and messed with my head in his setup.

Back onshore now and catching up. Sort of a tricky discussion here. Through my discussions with Jeremy, I think basically what he wants is to put the amp on 10 and have it sound the way it does when it's on 6. Past 6 just gets really saturated and loses its definition and focus. Lows fall apart, etc. Throw a bunch of bass at it, suck out classic sounding mids and it'd probably be death/speed/thrash metal tone in spades. Someone earlier eluded to every amp having it's sweet spot and 5 or 6 is exactly that with his amp IMO. I'd call it a day with the tone that amp gets because there's certainly no need for more distortion or volume, BUT, when he comes up this week, we can try different bright cap values and maybe even 12AT7 or 12AU7 in the PI. Or play with the PI voltage droppers to see if we can get it to maintain clarity and focus when dimed. I think it's just a matter of regulating that power section saturation. 8)

My amp (12xxx spec) sounds much more distorted when using the slave setup. It is much cleaner sounding going straight into the cab (or attenuator then cab). No PPIMV in my amp... Did you try Jeremy's amp just attenuated (no PPIMV and no slaving)?

Yeah, we ran it straight to the cab (pretty loud) and found that it still pretty much had all the distortion needed by about 6 on Vol I. Might have been a little cleaner but not a drastic "oh wow" sort of difference.

However, I do agree that a resistive load does change the headroom a bit and affect the power section saturation some. 8)

yup! no clips of those straight to the cab sounds.

stef wrote:In my amp 820 is very overdriven, bassy and very bright sounding. 2.7k is fuller in the mids, high and low mids, tighter (or less) bass and much cleaner. I liked 1k very much, it's in the middle tone-wise between these two. Marshall put that resistor (1k piher) as stock in my 70's amp
So your running a 2.7k there. I nned to try that

Do these pre tubes help out?

I would argue they are key for EVH tone.
