Problem with the "high" input...Help!!

Post by kurtsstuff » Sun Aug 07, 2005 2:29 am

I have a 1979 Marshall 2203 MV that all of a sudden...When plugged into the high gain input it sounds anemic and weak. I can crank it and it sounds like a 1 maybe 2 watt amp at best...The "Low" input seems fine but maybe suspect as well....of course I tried different tubes and no change..opened it up and don't see anything obvious...any ideas as to what it might be would be greatly appreciated or...Maybe just send it to George for a rub down :(

Have you swapped the first preamp tube with a known good tube...just to be sure it's not the tube itself?
How about the input jacks, could they use a good cleaning? You'll have to clean both jacks, the high input uses the switching contacts on the low jack as a connection between the extra gain stage and the second stage.

Hey Flames! thanks for the response! I did check the preamp tubes and swapped them with known good tubes...I'll try cleaning the jacks out and see what happens...Would plugging something into both inputs at the same time screw it up?? I remeber doing that in the past and having no adverse affect?? Thanks again!

Wow!! who woulda thought that a little tuner cleaner in an input jack would make a world of difference??? Thanks Flames...I would have never thought of something so obvious!! The Marshall Roars once again!! I'll leave now while bowing to your genius ;)
