Teflon Wire Size

Post by Guest » Tue Jul 26, 2005 5:29 pm

I just received some 22 gauge, 600v teflon wire, that I purchased from Powerwerx.com, which I planned on using for amp hook-up wire. But this stuff is so small I'd go blind installing it in an amp. The strand count is 19/34 and it looks about the O.D. of the MM choke wires. What gauge (teflon wire) makes for good hook-up wire on Marshall PTP? I think even 20 gauge of this stuff would be to small.

how thick the conductor needs to be depends on the current going through it (i.e. in general, more current going through = need thicker wire--take a look at the filament winding wires coming out of the power transformer compared to the B+ winding wires for example), but also depends on the length. The Teflon insulation can be thinner than PVC so that's why it seems so small (the Teflon insulation is thinner). Some guys go up a size (to 20AWG) because of the smallness. Also, if you want low resistance thick conductors are good, although it may not be necessary for the current going through.

The actual size of the wire is the same as what is in 22guage PVC. Thinner insulation makes it look small.
