Hi guys!

In recent past everyone to prefer carbon comp. resistor
newly i see everybody to use carbon film :? (perchance metal film)
is it matter of taste?

Marshall cloners have never really been big on the CC resistors like Fender and Fender-esque amp cloners. Fender used CCs because they were the cheapest at the time but people say they add a small amount of distortion to the high end thats only just audible and collectively they make a big difference. Marshalls traditionally dont use CC in most positions but they have used them. I have a large collection of old gut shots that show them used sparsely in most positions but especially for cathode resistors or decoupling resistors in the power supply. Marshall mostly used CF. As George pointed out a while back the xicon CCs that most people use now a days arent considered the same quality as the old CCs which can still be boiught NOS for a lot of $$$.

The Vishay/Dale metal film thing is pretty new from what Ive seen. A few manufacturers use them like Mojave. Many people feel they warm the signal up through the amp. I buy that but Ive never replced a whole amp with them to see. If I was building an amp I knew was gonna be a bit bright Id use them.

On another topic one thing CCs definitely add is hiss.

Greg Germino use carbon comp.

"If you want the best sounding Plexi Marshall sound,
this is it hands down!" (Germino Lead 55)
In most cases similar opinions..........

i have done a little experimenting with different resistors, and i use metal films, not the vishay's, the little blue ones. The OT and circuit is the most important part of an amplifiers sound, the capacitors second, what you are left with it the subtle difference that resistors make in the sound. metal is quieter and values are more accurate 1% and the values stay where they are supposed to be, thats why i use em'. but experiment for yourself and let us know what you hear. don't believe they hype, or the bullshit!
