THD yellow jackets

Post by evh fan » Sat Apr 30, 2005 6:54 pm

hey , im in the process of getting my plexi, and i think every one knows they have to be cranked to get ''the tone''. So im looking for stuff to be able to control the volume down , but still get good cranked tone. Do these yellow jackets help any? what if i ran 1 el34 and 3 yellow jackets in my amp, will it be quiet enough?

I think you'd have to run them in pairs. One EL34 and one yellow jacket on each side, or else all 4 the same.

I would guess that even in the same circuit an EL84 won't sound like an EL34 when cranked (or otherwise), though better or worse is always subjective of course. Someone else here might be able to offer some opinion on the actual differences. Personally, I was more inclined towards using an attenuator when faced with the volume conundrum.

I use them. One thing you can do is just use 2 and pull the other tubes. I do that. Ill tell you right now, though Ive always liked them, I have had a bit of a problem with them and the problem was mainly with the tubes they come with. I guess JJs are decent modern tubes but if you can get a decent NOS EL84 or 6BQ5 it will be much better. Higher headroom without such a trashy breakup like the new tubes. NOS 6BQ5s arent crazy expensive. Even so the amp is still very loud. It will seem to be about a third as loud as it was. The good thing is gentle attenuation will bring it down well with no need for extreme attenuation. Not unless you want bedroom volume. 20 watts is still very very loud in the room of a house.
