After hearing the difference between the various diodes i had tried so far - i had to go back and see how the slower ones sounded again.
what do you think?

I have a better question. How did you get each clip to be exactly 333,949 bytes?
My vote:
Rectifier: UF4007, Bias: UF4007
I like the compression or "squash" in that clip.

i played the clips against a drum track to keep the timing the same - then i used the same chunk of timeline in each export - funny though if they were exactly the same. bizarre. one more little vibrato and one would have been 333,950? hmmm.. maybe that says more about how PT/SoundForge/SoundClick compress the clips.
i guess. weird and wild.

I thought something like that might be going on.
I also noticed a sound difference between playing the embeded clips via soundclick and the downloaded mp3's. Damn digital crap!
After all of this, you'll have to start a diode company like SoZo did with caps!

i did these with bass and drums to hear them "in context" - i think this is so daggone interesting and i don't know why - these diodes are a component that really makes a big difference and it surprises me - and i just can't decide whether i like the smooth or the nasty.

i was hoping to get some more input on what you all hear but...

my ear says, slower is better. especially in the context of a full mix - the smoothness of the fast diodes doesn't let the guitar cut through.
RACKSYSTEMS was right about putting a fast diode on the bias only to lessen the effect.
i got interested in this after playing a friends vox AC30 with a tube rectifier. the fast diodes do more closely imtitate the sound of a tube rectifier in their stability and smoothness. i may try them in my JTM100 since it's the same pre amp circuit as the JTM45 that has the tube rectifier - and i use it for a power amp so the added stbility may work better in that part of the chain.

Well, I've been two days too busy, to watch the forum at all - but here I'm back again
Not much difference between the three clips, although I think, that I like the one w/ UF5408 everywhere best, because this clip does have the most lo chunk and punch. OTOH the clip w/ UF4007 everywhere has a nice compression, what isn't so much with the UF5408's - not easy to decide concretely.

...now you've got me wondering what those metal case diodes in the Metro store sound like
I liked the all 1N5408 clip the best until I heard the drum track clip in which I liked the exact opposite (all UF4007)...now I'm confused

just came across this, and i was wondering what you settled on, which did you use or like the best?
i think i like the 1n5408's with the uf4007 in the bias, getting ready to change mine soon.

i tried so many variations and the markings on the diodes are so hard to decipher that i don't even know what i currently have in my amp. all i know is that the faster diodes sounded so steady that they almost felt like solid state which i didn't like. i need to see a diagram (illustration of the board) that shows the diodes and indicates which is for bias and which for rectifier. anybody have that info and could share would help. thanks.

I just got done swapping 1n4007 to uf4007s and it made things too smooth, going to try 5408s today.

yeah 5403s are staying. Interesting what a difference the choice of diodes makes in the in the grand scheme...

It was the top end snap in the notes that I noticed most - surprising that the rectifier diodes make such a notable difference.
Mind, I'm not sure if the difference couldn't be changed either way by adjusting the EQ.

i ended up using 1n5408's and uf4007 for bias in my metro 2203/afd 36, i biased up some kt77's an oh my god do i have an amp now, absolutely killer tone, it just has this snarl to it now, much more aggressive.........love it.
