Flubby bass in 1987

Post by bdc » Sun Feb 14, 2016 5:03 pm

I am looking to get rid of flubby bass in my 74 1987...I run the amp with the bass on 1 or 0.. I was told once that a quick component value change at 1st gain stage would take care of it, but can't remember what this mod was. Please help.....thank you.....Think it was a cap change or adding one in parralel or series. I do not want more gain.......

The Normal channel (820R/330uF) always sounds like a bloated tuba to me. Try reducing the cathode bypass cap on the Normal channel from 220uF or 330uF (wherever you might have it) down to 4.7uF-22uF.

Are you running it with stock V1 (split cathode?) if you are using Bright input (channel 1) which has 2k7/0.68uF cathode caps that should not normally be an issue.

Has the amp been modded, need to see a decent board pic before we get into giving specific advice (some 74 amps had really weird factory components when they must have run out of correct parts.

What kind of cab (open/closed/ported) are you using and what speakers? These all make a difference, too.

'69 lead spec shouldn't have any flubb... You're using the bright channel right?
