Marshall 1962 Bluesbreaker RI mod

Post by Ricky Lee » Sun May 08, 2005 6:14 pm

I need to know the who, what, when and where's of moding this amp. I am new at this, but I paint my numbers real well. For now I would like to keep the stock board because of the tremelo system and I would like to mod a circuit type board at least once anyway. Also, It is my under standing I would loose the tremelo if I went the HW route on the Bluesbreaker. I have a complete 100 watt kit coming from George next week, which will give me the HW experience. Write now I just need to have a laundry list for the Bluesbreaker mod. I already have the KT66's and GT 12AX7 Mullards, I know that's a small start but I heard a great improvement just changing those. Any guidance with this project will be greatly appreciated. I have attached a pic of the board if that will help. Also, you guys are the greatest! This is the first forum I have ever really enjoyed being in! George is great, but don't tell him I said that - we all have our ego!

Changing out those grey lego caps for Sozos is another to try. Getting a new output tranny is probably the biggest thing IMO. New filter cans with the old values is another thing. I wouldnt change out the board in a BB RI either.

Not true -- IF George has time to make one; he has done PTP boards for the BluesBreaker before. The problem is, I'm not sure if they were ever a regular item he made up enough of to keep in stock -- you'll have to get in touch with him to see if he's got any or has time to do another.
There was a thread by the guy that had the BB RI PTP board, he posted under the name McGoogle McDougal if I remember correctly. Do a search and see if you can find his posts, he had some nice pics of the board I think.

You should try to do all the suggestions on that page. Theres also more OTs to consider then MM like OEI. Heboer and Marstran. Also another problem with KT66s Ive heard about is physically fitting them in without being pushed against the cab. Not sure what thats about but Ive heard it.

KT66's fit fine in bluesbreaker combo, plenty of room - I'm using the GT K66 big bottle. The only hard part is finding the tube retainers for such a big bottle, you have to find the fabric retainers on Ebay - You can't use the OEM retainers for the 5881 valves because they will rattle. But the KT66's make a world of difference even without the total mod i.e. way richer and sweeter. It even got better with the GT 12AX7M Mullard RI's. I have the Sozo's coming, but there are some more pieces parts in that article that doesn't mention what brand to use - that gets confusing. Also, finding the mounting bracket for the 16uF + 16uF cap is next to impossible - it's a 1" bracket and the OEM bracket is 1 3/8". So far no luck on that one.
