Laney Tube-Pro 50 (50 Watt EL34) amp

Post by BBN-Boys » Wed Apr 13, 2005 7:21 pm

I'm expecting delivery of a Laney Tube-Pro 50 (50 Watt EL34) amp. :D Got it off of eBay. Can you guys tell me more about this amp? I was thinking about putting a PTP board in it (1987 50W Specs). Make it into my "Frankenstein" amp. Anyone have any comments about the trannies. Not sure if the trannies are any good or worth keeping. I never had any experience with Laney amps before. I've been to busy with the Marshalls and Fenders.

This is Off of the Ebay description:
"This is a Laney 50 watt amp. The amp is based off a Marshall plexi circuit. But this amp has a modified pre amp that produces more gain. Fresh EH EL-34's and a snakeskin cab. This amp really sounds good for early EVH and ac/dc tones. Cranked up the crunch really breaks nicely. Well worth the bang for buck. All tube signal with sweet tone. New filter caps also so this amp is fresh."

According to the seller, the head cab is made by Kress Amps. I hear a lot of good things about Kress' re-tolex work. The snakeskin tolex isn't really my style, but I may change my mind when I see it in person. We'll see.

Since I kinda got an OK deal on this head ($300) I was planning on using it as my hot-rod test amp. I'll put in a different PTP boards, different component/values.... to help me see what I like best and apply my findings to my other clones. I hope I don't blow the amp up (or myself) in the process. Wish me luck.

I was hoping to get some feedback on these Laney amps. I have never played a Laney before. Who knows... I may like the stock Laney sound. This amp is suposed to be modeled after the plexi. I gotta hear it to believe it.

PS That Kress blonde girl is kinda HOT though. :P Hot blondes, guitars, and Marshalls... Can't get any better than that! ...ooops, I hope this is not a "family forum"....

Circuit in my Pro Tube Lead 50 is basically just a 2204. Pay attention to the wiring of the preamp tubes. If I remember correctly, the first preamp tube in my amp is wired exactly opposite than Marshall's layout. Same circuit, just different sides of the tube.
Also double check all solder joints on caps, pots, sockets, etc. My amp has no mechanical "hooked" solder joints. The stripped wires were simply placed against their intended lug and soldered. I guess it takes too much time to bend a hook shape into the wires.
My amp is bright and aggressive. Your's should make a great test mule.

This Laney is the 4-input model. Very similar to the 1959/1987 models. I don't see very much of these models around. Most of the one I've seen are are the 2-input MV type 2203/2204. Since this model is the 4-put type, I thought this would be perfect to put in a PTP board and do experiments on.

Can anyone direct me to some Laney schematics. I've done a little searching but came up empty.

Thanks

Schematic for your amp can be found on Laney's site. It's there, just keep looking.
