Need some opinions.

Post by Dax-The-Ax » Tue Feb 15, 2005 12:39 am

I run a stereo setup. A 76' 50 watt Lead for dirty and a JCM800 2203 for clean. My dilemma is this, The JCM800 is modded to hell, Tube buffered FX Loop, Extra Holes where Tube overdrive Mods were installed and removed, Frickin' Goo balls inside, but the clean sound is totally awesome!! Crystal clear and powerful, with the FX Loop the clean sounds are just great. The OD sound is pretty good also, with some tweaking. I really hate the rats nest and shit inside (looks Horrid) and i am tempted to Remove all mods and install a Metro Board and convert it to a Superlead, but i don't want to lose the great clean tone. What do you all think? Leave it alone or clean er up?

Thanks
Dax

If that amp is giving you the cleans that you like and it's reliable and quiet, I'd leave it for now. You've got plenty of Marshall dirt sitting around already. And the 800 ain't going anywhere, you can restore it later if you no longer need that clean sound.
If you restore it where will you turn for the cleans? (You might even have to get......a FENDER. Or a MUSIC MAN. Oh, the horror.)

Does a stock 800 have a crystal clear normal channel? I wonder if my normal channel has been modded?

Depends what your idea of a crystal clear clean sound is. I like the clean sound of an 800 set low. But not that much. I dont know if yours is stock. On a circuit like an 800 any mod is going to effect everything. From your description the only mod your 2203 has, other then scattered lead dress, is a buffered loop. I personally dont think a loop could possibly help a clean sound but the right set of conditions may exist in your amp that it contributes to your perfect clean sound. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Can it possibly be any worse than the black epoxy cluster-fuck mod that someone posted ages ago??

Here ya go boys, it was much worse before, it was full of white and black "Goo" (covering the secret mods!!!), hummed like shit. George cleaned it up some, removed the tube mod and replaced some of the Caps. It had an added tube for gain which was removed, and it had holes drilled in the front for the Gain controls, so it now has 4 inputs (2 are dummies), i hate empty holes. But it works good!!!

This thing would be nice with new controls and a PTP Board. And i love the FX Loop!!?? I know you all are like, AHHH!!! FX Loop!!!! AHHH!!! But I love a little Reverb and delay. I may Add the board, convert to 1959 specs, and have George install a nice, pretty FX Loop, the holes and controls are already there!!??  :? :?

Can't believe someone would rape this amp, I have the complete full stack.

Its not that bad at all. I thought itd be much worse. Its just that congragation of true point to point wiring around that one preamp tube which Im assuming is your tube buffered loop.

Pretty nifty idea with the dummy inputs. In the words of Napoleon Dynamite, "DANG!"

It also has some components added for more gain, it's stock gain until about 4 on the preamp knob. I am finally digging the lead channel, i have to turn all the tone controls to about 2, though, any higher and it's real midrangy. I wish they wouldn't have raped it, though!

What are those 2 knobs on the back of the amp?

The knobs are to adjust the Send and Return levels. The Send has a level knob and the Return has a level knob. I have a small Circuit board that George made for me, anyone want to volunteer to remove all that FX Loop shit and put it on a seperate board so it's nice and pretty? I don't know if i can reverse engineer it or not.
