Any 60's Coily Cord Reproductions Out There?

Post by Brandon » Wed Jan 26, 2011 2:14 pm

Does anybody know of anyone accurately reproducing the 60's coily cords? The kind of cord that cuts the highs and does all of the things coil cables are known for?

Someone on another post recommended the Fender coily cable... anybody ever tried it?

I wonder if you could measure the capacitance in those cords and then just make a box with the capacitor value in there. Instant coily cord tone.

Guys I have a couple of them that do actually cut highs, especially when you roll the volume knob back off of 10. The key element here really is to get CHEAP ones. As funny as it sounds. Theres lots of more expensive ones that are coily just for the cool vintage vibe, but they're still high capacitance cables like monster or something.... I believe I bought some at Radio Shack as well as some other places online. Online I know I didnt pay any more than 10 dollars a cable. I think it was more like 7 or something. They're not bullet proof stuff but they will do what you're asking for.

I've totally got the same ones, the ones from online, and yeah they worked great shaving highs.

More recently I pick up a vox coil cable, way heavier, and kinda middle ground tonewise between a decent quality straight cable and a cheap coil.

I got a white lavacable retro coil and it sounds really really good. It may be expensive, but it destroys the others in a comparison.

Just wondering, what are "the others"?

What kind of comparison did you make?

In what way did it "destroy" the others?

The "others" were the fender/vox coils.
I've also tried the Radioquack cables and didn't like them.

I tried the three into the same rig one after the other.

TO ME, it sounded way more clear while still shaving highs if that makes any sense. Most say that capacitance sucks tone, but this cable is very clear, and sounds super Hendrix-y. It EVEN sounds good through a Fender G-DEC. :listen:

Sounds like maybe it had some capacitance, but maybe not as much as the others, it shaved off the high-highs, but not the mid-highs, or the high-mids, where the "tone" lives.

I've been using a white Bullet Coil cable for a year or two and it's great!

Yeah this one I was looking for too. Just didn't know whether to believe it's that good or if it's just all hype. Have you maybe compared the Bullet Cables to Lava ones? If anyone did this would pretty much close the deal for me...

CoreOne Bullet is The Winner for me. I've been using them the past few years and they deliver.
Great cord Kool colors to boot.
I just ordered the newer Retro but, I didn't like the near +$25 diffifernce in price but, I just have to know hands on what the diff is.

Although, good in theory. I refuse to use the cheapies. The crackling drives me insane ! :bang:
If your looking for a quality cable, this is The One.

ya, my cheap fender crackles a lot. I love my lava retro, it does have a different tone, almost seems to have more cap than the cheap fender, but I really don't know.

They're $42,95 on their site... so they were $27. That's pretty cheap. My last cables were about $60. Worth every penny imo. Cables, pretty much like anything else, are very important for the sound I like. I feel the more overdriven my sound is the less important which cables I use gets. Since we're here in the Hendrix section I guess most of us want to get clean sounds at lower volume settings of the guitar and no ice picking harsh overdriven sounds at 10. Besides amp, pickups, fuzz, etc... the cable is just as important I believe.
