can't wait
I just have to yak about it. Waiting for funds to make their way into my paypal before I pull the trigger on a bare bones chassis kit, my first 100w amp, and my first amp head.
Already started collecting parts, including over 75 bucks CAD for a bulgin plug and socket lol, Got the NOS RS filter cap for the board and all the resistors I need, including some ABs. Got some NOS silver micas too, slowly getting there. I hope watching it come together is as much fun as collecting the parts .
I'm targetting the alleged Hendrix Dickenson amp pics, not that there's a huge diff. Should be ordering the end of next week.

Re: can't wait
A lot of people have said things along this line but this is my favorite amp even tho I dont use it nearly as much as others and dont get nearly as many tones out of it but the tone you get from it feels 'right'. It has more 'plunk' to a note than any amp I can remember playing at any level of drive. A very unique sound. A JTM45 with balls. The only thing that could make a JTM45 better. It sits well in between a 45 and later 100W.

This is a great description of a 45/100. I played through a friend's metro kit (mustards, lemco's, etc.) and I agree with all of the above. I will make some sound clips when I get the amp back from him (minor issue being fixed).
It also has by far the best Marshall cleans I've ever heard. Very nice amp. I would add this to paraphrase Billy: 100w attack with 45 warmth! Very unique sound/feel that's hard to compare to other standard Marshall's. You just have to play one to understand.
I'm not sold on it's higher gain settings though but the amp I played hasn't been broken in yet. It gets a little fuzzy past 7 or so but that will likely improve with use. It also ghosts like crazy but I gather that is just the nature of the beast. I would probably have to up the filtering a little if it were mine.

Re: can't wait
experiment with tubes or the choke before you up the filtering. tubes need to be matched for transconductance

Re: can't wait
Anyone done a 45/100 and then modded it to Dickinson spec to discover the differences in the same amp?
Or am I going to have to do it?
Problem is I am not set up for home recording (yet) certainly not to be able to make good enough quality clips for comparison (then threre is my guitar playing under pressure - x10 takes later to do the 'double tracking' )

Minor issue fixed thought I had a bad pot but it was just bad eyes. Had part of one of the wires on the treble pot grounding out the buss bar. Not much but enough to cause problems.toner wrote:This is a great description of a 45/100. I played through a friend's metro kit (mustards, lemco's, etc.) and I agree with all of the above. Re: can't wait
I've experimented with the preamp filtering in my 45/100. and tried a plexi with a tone stack switch. I've experimented a bit with preamp voltages also, esp in my 50w.

Hope I am not hijacking thread as DougH is building his to that spec form the outset

Re: can't wait
appart from the 470 screen resistors (resulting in blown up kt66s), the dickinson mods will not make a lot of difference. the 8k2/10k voltage drop resistor aint gonna affect the preamp voltages more than different wall voltages anyway. just use what you need to approx the right voltages. I dont think you need the 10k with a 500v b+. the 33k/500pf tone stack may be a good idea if your amp is dark. but i'd rather try a 270pf slope cap first and some brighter preamp tubes.
here's two more amps with high preamp filtering:

Re: can't wait
The slope cap on mine is already 270pF with 56k resistor.
I have a single 22uF BC in preamp (but obviously only the 8k2 and one 10k in the B+ line).
Pre amp tubes are yellow label Mullards V1 AND V2 and M8137 in PI, GEC KT66s (new when I installed them approx 3 years ago IIRC).
The amp is a dead ringer for my JTM45 until the 45 breaks up and this keeps going!

BLAM!!
That's me pulling the trigger.
Now I have to decide whether I want to try and track down some old style selector plugs, they are kinda cool. I hope the round bulgin power plug fit's nice on the back too.

Re: can't wait
The old style selectors are too small to fit a chassis punched for the modern Marshall selector. And they're not easy to find.

guess that's out then, thanks for the heads up, I would have likely assumed they'd fit.

The old paxolin wafer old ones fit (pre 68) these chassis well without gaps (see my latest 100watt buildsFlames1950 wrote:The old style selectors are too small to fit a chassis punched for the modern Marshall selector. And they're not easy to find.
the later plastic window ones not so well (you would need to make a washer) and there would still be a gap in the plexipanel.
