Great show! Nice change of pace, Hicks on guitar, two girls on vocals and percussion, a violin/mandolin player and lead (acoustic) guitar. I swear I heard drums and bass in the mix though. Another engaging front man/ story teller like Paul Thorn. His quirky stuff is pretty funny but they are seriously good players and when they played straight up Gypsy jazz I swear the lead player was channeling Django Rheinhardt. Damn that FUKIN guy was EXCELLENT!!! And the violinist definitely has heard Stephan Grappelli. (sure beats listening to van halen wanking, a whole ‘nother level of talent). Total Django. When I mentioned we were going to see him a friend asked “Dan Hicks is still around?????” which led me to wonder how old he is…..and he’s not too shabby for fukin 72!!!!!
I love Hicks “Beatin the Heat” CD. Lots of guest stars, Elvis Costello, Setzer, Tom Waits, Rickie Lee Jones
