I always thought Duane played slide in standard tuning, especially since initially, Warren Haynes sorta filled Duanes sound in the Allman Brothers, and WH is SO proficient at it.
Along the line, I've been teaching myself with slide in standard tuning, simply so I dont have to change guitars, or re-tune. It can be difficult at times, and nowhere near as easy as an open tuning, but the guitar is also pretty limited in open tuning when NOT playing slide... except in the hands of Derek Trucks, who does not seem to be human in his ability to play ANYTHING in open tuning, so he doesnt count.

Apparently, Duane used whatever suited him, whether playing slide or not, and his phrasing was SO dynamic... one of THE best players to ever sling a strap over his shoulder, IMO.

As far as I know he played in open E major almost exclusively when he played slide. Warren basically taught himself to play Duane's licks in standard tuning, which were originally in open E.

I've seen Eric Sardinas... he opened for Steve Vai in the Westbury Music Fair out on Long Island. I DID like him, and he has a cool, flamboyant rock/blues style, but as far as phrasing and technical proficiency ??

A LOT of players could clean his clock... Johnny Winter, Duane, Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes and Robert Randolph immediately come to mind.

VERY cool ES clips there, my man. He really DOES play very aggressively on those cone machines, and he's got a great act and style.
I LOVE playing slide, and along with many others, he would be someone to cop some shit from, no doubt.

That's one of the most awesome slide collection's I've ever seen ! I'd be proud to own that.

Recently have been practicing on the couch while watching hockey games; trying to save the bottle as it slides off the top of my belly... That's playin' the slide. I'm getting good at it, now...but... I'll never sound like Duane Allman or any one of these guys...

Yeah fil, you are dead on with the skills of DT's Musicianship which puts him far beyond the rest to include his human-like approach in phrasing. Sardinas being a complete 180° from that.

I guess I learned (still learning) the Duane way, but that's just for straight forward soloing. I suck at it...
I use the coricidin's opposed to anything else, but I marvel how these masters use the metal slides. It's a fricken art, man ! To have that delicate touch as Duane had it's like me being a bull in a china shop. Finesse finesse finesse !

Jimmy blew my brains out when Physical Graffiti came out.heh, I started slide when it was my time to die.


So, I assume now the answer to pancri's fillmore Q is

Well, yeah that's how I do it and I still suck...

I have found that I would be a much better slide player if I devoted enough time to it, but it has always been a sideline to my regular playing. When I was in junior high and high school I learned several slide tunes that I liked, but I didn't work as hard on slide playing as I should have...There are the Jimmy Page numbers which feature slide which are a great place to start because they are extremely easy..."Hats Off (To Roy Harper)", "In My Time Of Dying", "You Shook Me", "Travelling Riverside Blues" (on Fender Electric XII 12-string)...most beginners can play these accurately without alot of effort.

Then I learned a few Duane Allman tunes which start getting a bit more difficult-the absolute requirement for every slide player is learning "Statesboro Blues" from the Fillmore album, and I started with that one. It is in open E and so is the rest of Duane's slide playing. I then learned Duane's parts from "One Way Out" (after I figured out Richard Betts' parts in standard tuning). Then I played around with Duane's overdubs on "Layla", but there are many overdubs and subtle variations going on in that tune, so I have to say I didn't really learn that note-for-note.

Outside of Duane, I learned some other slide tunes like ZZ Top's "Tush" and "Just Got Paid"... Blackfoot's "Train, Train" and Bonnie Raitt's version of John Hyatt's "Something To Talk About"...a few others, but not many more. There is a lot of finesse and pitch control that you have to get from just playing slide alot and practicing it alot. I can't even begin to learn the crazy brilliant and technically difficult playing of Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, etc...that shit requires a hell of a commitment to get a handle on...

So, in short, I suck too

Funny how its what we get used to... I've always used a chrome steel slide, and recently been using a medium wall thickness brass slide. I cant get a tone out of glass for shit. I have ceramic slides, aluminum slides, and the time honored coricidin bottle, but for me, nothing beats chrome or brass.
That chrome steel slide on a Tricone strung with 80/20 bronze heavies is a thing of beauty, Ill tell ya!!
