Hadn't listened to Paul that much before, I knew he was an awesome player when I was back in Pa., but I recently caught these videos and think he has a great understanding of many styles and explains well :)

i kind of enjoyed his latest "get out of my yard" too. he's got a good sense of humor & it comes through in his playing. i'm glad to see him on the g3 or g4 or whatever they call that tour, i think his career could of gone alot further with the right project.

Andy is killer. paul is a monster. something about vai i never really got into. ( his intonation drives me nuts.)

Mike, check this out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMJD_c-WxPg tons of feel the guy has. great vibrato. very expressive he is.( goose bumps for me in a couple spots in this clip. )

in fact after listening to this again makes me want to check out a Laney schematic to have an amp for that kind of sound as well. ;)

This song is great; that was the first one of his that I heard. I like when he and Vai are trading solos, I believe it's from this same show, and he really had a fire and soul in his playing whereas Vai sounded like he always does, which to me is technically great, but sterile. Anyway, the look on Vai's face after Andy solos is like "Wow", which doesn't happen too often. Andy Timmons seems very humble as well, similiar to Paul Gilbert.
Also, you should check out Paul's Guitar From Mars Part 1 and 2. Part one is lessons on Blues, and part two covers Classical. I may have that reversed. They're from an obscure, apparently Japanese-only, instructional video that Paul did in the 90's. Very cool stuff.

Before you go chasing a Laney scheme, check out Andy's website. He has some great movie clips of him recording his latest cd. He's using a couple old marshalls set fairly clean, and hitting them with a chandler tube driver. Great player, and I really like how he turns every phrase just a little differently.

I think Paul Gilbert is totally amazing 8) He has flawless technique and he is more tasteful than 99% of the "shredders" out there.
I never really dug his tone though, especially in his early Racer X days.
It's not as bad now but man, he used to sound like he was playing on a banjo :?

i love racer x. i also almost idolize paul gilbert for his technique and punctuality on guitar and music in general without being cocky or arrogant. he's so down to earth and yet very, very, very talented. at 19 he recorded street lethal. theres videos on youtube that speak of the money involved in recording that album. i think he said close the 250,000 all in all after it was done.

this was at 19?!?!

the tone he had for racer x was meh... but the guitar he played through was really awsome. the mini humbucker in the neck gave it that sqwauk-plik-sqwauk-plik sound. i actually like it.

but the gain involved with that ADA-MP1 preamp is just mind boggling. like, my youtube vid vs his back to back is literally night and day. and my 5150 isnt exactly a pushover for metal. it can hold its ground to mesa's anyday ;p

Paul Gilbert never totally won me over. His tone,phrasing and overall 'style' didnt do it for me. He plays WAY to many straight scales, ala 3 notes per string type stuff. Same with most of the Shrapnel guy's.

Timmon's is more 'musical',which is a hard thing to describe(musicality),cause some just have more of it (like Carl and Mark) than others. The 'OTHER's' tend to gravitate towards repetitive things to "appear" to be more musical. Dont get me wrong,I like technical ability on the guitar,but I like musical soul more.
