Post by yngwie308 » Sun Oct 07, 2007 11:10 am

I wasn't really into them at the time, hadn't heard them that much, but awesome tight stuff, Doug Pinnick and Ty Tabor had a great combination ,with their drummer,(sorry don't know his name.

Jerry Gaskill is the drummers name.

You say "had" as if they are not playing anymore. That is not the case as they are recording a new album at this time.

Great call, David... by far one of the most underrated bands ever.

Doug Pinnick is originally from Joliet / Lockport. I used to teach High School with his cousin.

Doug's got a set of pipes, that's for sure.

I've seen them countless times since '88. Great lead vocals, 3 part harmony, and playing from all three. I try to catch them every time they come through my area. One of my all time favorite bands. Definitely best appreciated live.

Chiming in for King's X and Ty Tabor here. I have loved them since their first album came out in 88. And Ty Tabor has been my favorite guitarist since then as well. New release in a couple of weeks called "XV" in honor of 25th year together as King's X.

Hey George...I already had the impression from what I've read on the boards here that you must be an alright guy. But if you love King's X, even if Ty doesn't use Marshalls or Metros...then I'm convinced. You're alright! If they ever play anywhere near you I highly recommend you see them.
Anyone else reading this who doesn't know about King's X...seek these out:
"Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" (best of their early stuff and Ty was using a Lab Series L-5 then!)
"Dogman"
"Ear Candy" (out of print..good luck)
"Tape Head"
"Ogre Tones"
"Live All Over The Place" They are BAD ASS live!

The big secret was the tube power amps he used after them. Also don't forget the Strat Elite.

Can be found on Ebay. Ty used the L-5 on this album as well as other amps. He also had the Strat Elite going.

For a lot of years he used a pre-amp he had removed from the L-5 and rack mounted (sold on E-Bay recently) and slaved it into Crown power amps, then Marshall power amps for a while. Then for a number of years he used Mesa Triple Rectifiers, then for a while he recorded and toured with a Pod. Lately he has been using Randall with a couple of different modules ("Plexi" mostly). The Strat Elite was a long time ago. Zion made an Elite copy Ty Tabor model he used for a couple of years. For some time now he has been playing his signature model Yamaha. He gets great tones out of whatever he uses. And Dug...his bass set-up and tone is legendary. Not many bass players get my attention, but his is the most awesome sound on the planet. There's lots of more famous bands who don't like to play after King's X.

I did see him here in Detroit with Marshall amps.

I have seen them for every show since the King's X album (number 4). I missed seeing them on the Faith, Hope and Love tour as I went to see Eric Johnson warm up for Steve Miller. I could have still made the show and still kick myself in the ass for not catching them on that leg of the tour.

The Mesa and POD years are not my favorite but Ty still played like Ty. The POD was pumped through a tube power amp as well.

I was at the Nashville NAMM show when they were recording down there and just missed Ty at the Randall booth when he decided to use their, Egnater designed, modular system.

Yes, the Elite is long gone but it was a big part of his early sound and he even used the preamp of the guitar as a pedal for a bit after leaving it behind.

What was Dug using in the early days for his bass amp? I know he has recently been using a Taylor head. I do miss the early shows when Dug would preach a bit to the audience. It used to give me chills. He still drives home a very positive message to the crowd but in a bit more colorful way.

I think we both have a bit too much knowledge of King's X.
