Johnny Winter

Post by fillmore nyc » Fri Sep 21, 2007 8:09 pm

Got started with the 6 string obsession cause of this guy. I was lucky enough to meet him, Muddy Waters and James Cotton on Muddy Waters birthday. Drank some brews, and ate birthday cake with them. From that point on I knew I'd die a happy man. Bottom line: to me, with or without a slide, he's the MAN. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ytdsPVkNCOM http://youtube.com/watch?v=-8siLZ4zNbY http://youtube.com/watch?v=eBcNOp0EZBc& ... ed&search= http://youtube.com/watch?v=xIIDqH8q0Dw& ... ed&search=

That was a life changer for me as well, Yng. Also, I believe to date, Second Winter is the only 3 sided album ( ) by ANY artist. The recordings prior to that (Johnny Winter, and Progressive Blues Experiment) are amazing as well. BTW, when it was first released on vinyl, PBE was initially called "Austin Texas". (a little trivia) 8) 8)

Nah, the last I knew he was living on the upper east side in a building on 81st and York. Im not sure, but I THINK he's still there. MFP is long gone. Great place to see a show, and I saw many of 'em there. (VERY 8) )

I have seen him live in Frankfurt 1983 and in Offenbach 1987. The Frankfurt concert was simply awesome. He played his Firebird and just freakin' smoked with the most inspired solos ever heard. The Offenbach concert was boring to me. At that time he played the headless Lazer. The songs were all too long with endless uninspired soloing. Whatever will happen I will always remember the 1983 concert as one of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Do you remember the original Hammerheads in Leavittown (I think?)

I was a little young for that one but I did see one of the last shows there, Whiplash was playing. Neil & Seth wound up playing in Samantha later on.
Neil (Johnny Gale) is a hell of a picker. I once heard him play the sax break from that Doors song where the sax goes off at the end. :? (The mind is the second thing to go....I think...) :?

Hammerheads was a staple for seeing shows on LI, along with MFP, Malibu, etc. The first time I saw JW was at Madison Square Garden, right after he got out of rehab from smack addiction. Ive seen him more than Ive seen any other artist, and was only dissapointed when he showed up too fucked up to play a decent show. Once at OBI East, he nodded out completely, and the bass player nudged him to conciousness. Sad stuff, and its part of the reason he's degenerated the way he has, though I hear his recent shows have picked up some. PS--hey, Yng... you're a local boy as well? Whereabouts ya'll hail from? 8) 8)
