Yngwie Malmsteen To Play London Guitar Fest
Tuesday, 20 May 2008
Yngwie Malmsteen, one of rock's premiere virtuoso guitarists, is confirmed to play the London Guitar show, part of the London International Music show, on Saturday, June 14th.

In association with Marshall amps, the critically acclaimed, Grammy winning Malmsteen will join a line-up for the show which includes Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Phil Hilborne, Billy Sheehan, Guthrie Goven, Ritchie Kotzen and Jamie Humphries...a shredding heaven for any guitar fan.

Composer, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader, Yngwie is universally regarded as a truly innovative electric guitar virtuoso and respected among both his peers and fans. With jaw-dropping technique, lightning fast riffs and a classically inspired technique, he has been honoured through-out the world for his mastery of the guitar, with even mention recently in the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II.

That's a good thing...
It's like sprinkles on ice cream...

My Cuz went through 3-4 before he found one with the right vibe.
He took advantage of the 30 day policy at GC.
He has a OlyWht/Mpl and CARed/RW.
I like playing the RW which is darker but the maple does sound more vintage.
As an alternative (price wise too), you could always find an older Blackmore and change out the pickups.
The scallop is not as deep but has the same feel...
Fender Japan is another way to go as well.

Update:
Never mind... I see (in another thread) that you picked one up. 8)

Hey Dave, have you seen the new guitar world mag with Yngwie on the cover ? You're right, the Custom shop is doing an exact copy of Yngwie's 'duck'. It's a '71(my birth year :D ), first year of the 3 bolts. . I think the centerfold poster is a replica of the duck, not for sure though.

yngwie308 wrote:Welcome SeventiesMonk! Look at the earlier Malmsteen artistes thread as well.
I believe he had the gain allmost full up and the volume as well.
Sounds like you have the amp and guitar setup down.
I am a fan through Magnum Opus at least, Yngwie favoring more distortion on his sound these days.
I'm hoping for a return to the older tone myself on the new lpee :)

Thanks for responding!

What I don't understand is, there seems to be more distortion in his sound these days but from what I gather, his gear hasn't changed all that much since the early days. So where is this extra gain coming from?

Check this out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... gory=41416

Notice how the seller claims Yngwie stacks two 250's? Is there any truth in that?

Also didn't see this mentioned and it's probably common knowledge but on this cover of the first album, you can see that the nut on his Strat is not brass.

:)

This has been debated ad nauseum over on the Malmsteen Fan Forum.
The linking of two DOD250's, the use if a DOD 250 and a Tube Screamer, ect.
One member there and ocasional poster here Deuterium uses an Analogman ROSS Comprossor, or whatever it's called, a remake of the famous compressor and he has experimented and found with the YJM308 Mojo modded pedal he can approximate the later Malmsteen 'tone'.
I think the change in tone started with the "Play Loud' videos, where Yngwie used the Roc Pro 1000 head in the studio. If you watch these Play Loud clips, you can hear the distorted almost nasally sound of his signal and it definitely has some major compression going on, either at the board or in his signal chain.
Yngwie is well aware of all the comments about the tone and when I saw him in Tucson in 2005, the soundcheck, which I heard outside th venue, his tone was much clearer. The Pedalworx twin 250 has been tried as well in the past, I have tried a Tube Screamer with my YJM308 Mojo pedal and the effect wasn't very musical let's say!
The mystery continues..

I think he just uses a 'lone' 250, which would be pretty much dimed. In my experience, linking 2 togather results in a very 'woofy' muffled sorta sound that loses definition. Like Dave has said, very 'unmusical'.

I think Yngwie used a second 250 as a back up, cause his older 'grey' models didnt have an adaptor I dont think, and those 250's will EAT up a 9 volt in a hurry when used like Yngwie uses them (on all the time, as well as being maxed out). So he kept a second fresh one just in case. The 250 is essential to getting that big sound out of a strat. It compliments a Marshall 4 holer very well.
