"Most" famous?? Gotta disagree "famously" there, TL.

The first Les Paul / Marshall tone has to be the most famous ( if there is a most....
Who has been as famous for guitar tone since EVH? I didn't say he was the first to have a unique tone.
Back in the early to mid-'80s, EVERYbody and their brother was trying to get that tone (but couldn't). They'd buy this guitar and that pickup, and that amp, and that pedal, and those tubes. Every Rock guitar player was after that tone. Of course the old guys weren't interested, but everyone else was. I remember all the magazine ads for all the different products that went after "that" tone. It was good for business.

Who was trying to get Clapton tone, or any of the other great players who have been mentioned here?? A few, but I would bet not all that many compared to those chasing the EVH tone....
Hey! Who you calling old, son???? :x

I'll admit I was an EVH tone chaser with the rest but I've come to realize what I liked before was better. I'm bored to tears with the EVH "grail" chase. When I lsiten to it now I hardly call it brown. The highs are biting like annoying to me. That tone makes me think of all the billion note a second players it spawned. I still say that if the songs weren't good he would be just another shredder.

Glad some guys are putting some emphasis on style. +1

Lots of those classis players were unique enough that every guitar player wanted to copy their tone and style.. Instead of remaining "unique", they defined the very sound of modern guitar-so big credit due there. But when everyone is barking up the same tree? I like hearing someone trying to bark up their own tree.

Holdsworth is playing a Synthaxe and he's playing with sax like phrasing which takes some doing technique wise as I play the sax and guitar and trying to transfer some of the things I play on the sax to the guitar is pretty hard to do and I don't do it often but Holdsworth is a master at it.

The Synthaxe does result in a certain type of unique tone but then again it's really a synth controller http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SynthAxe" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Sand" features guitarist Holdworth's experiments with the Synthaxe instrument--kind of a cross between a guitar and a synthesizer."

I dont know if its AH's playing in this particular song, but Im also hearing a lot of Holdsworth's influence in Derek Trucks, when DT is with his own band... not with the ABB.

Louie Armstrong and King Curtis...THAT's the horn guys you wanna steal licks and phrasing from!

Ever hear Beck cop a total sax tone on the HoneyDrippers on "Good Rockin at Midnight"? Bet some of you guys thiought it WAS a sax.

Derek Trucks has a really unique style and technique. I saw him a few weeks ago ... I was never into Holdsworth that much.
Where do you hear these influences, fillmore?

Well, its more of hearing an influence of Holdsworth than to say that he outright sounds like Holdsworth. Stylistically, and in their phrasing, I hear a similarity between the two, though AH seems to be more steeped in jazz than DT. I hear this in his playing specifically with his own band, but NOT with the Allman Brothers. He seems to pull out a lot of "World Music" type of phrasing with his own band.
I gotta give Holdsworth his props, but personally, I WAY prefer DT to AH any day.

I'd like to recant any perceived negative's I may have stated about Jack White. Although he still may not be the most unique, I need to offer a BIG BIG hat tip. If for nothing else, because of this video. He blends a few Son House covers, and hell, there's millions and millions of kids that would never have heard Son House's name if it wasn't for him. I think us old guys that like some blues, can at least realize that this guy is bringing something to a younger generation that they would have completely missed out on.

And ohh yeah. I completely love how how he adds his own personal mayhem. Crap. That's how I feel. Can't give enough thumbs up!

Particularly enjoy the addition of "Grinnin' in your face"! (please get that far)
I'll take emotion over playing any day.
