Thin Lizzy?! Aw man! NOW you're talking! I remember being handed a promo copy of Live And Dangerous, as a kid. From that day, I was hooked! Sadly, I never felt their studio recordings held up as well as that live album. Everything just seemed subdued, ya know?
I have an episode of VH1 Classic's Classic In Concert, that is Thin Lizzy, live, shortly before they were to split up, with John Sykes. Man, watching him burn up the fretboard of that black LP Custom made me want one so bad, I wasn't happy till I got one, but, for me, the guitar duo of Lizzy was always Gorham and Robertson. I guess that live album performance is so ingrained in my head, after all those years of playing the hell out of it, that anybody else playing those parts just isn't the same for me.

I agree, Gorham and Robertson were "IT" as far as the best Thin Lizzy goes. I get mad when U2 are alway's being raved about as being Irelands best musical band. To me, U2 isnt even a wart on Thin Lizzy's ass :D . Granted, Gorham is American and Robertson Scottish, still Lizzy was based in Ireland. Lynott was/is seriously underated as a writer/lyricist. He 'engaged' the listener as good as I've ever heard.

I bought Still Dangerous last week. HIGHLY recommended. If you're a Thin Lizzy fan, it's indispensable.

Also bought the Alive and Dangerous DVD. Was very excited about this one as there is also footage of a 1983 show with John Sykes on guitar. Imagine my disappointment when I fired it in the DVD player ... and NONE of the concert footage has ANY sound whatsoever... :x Tried it in three different DVD players. Nothing.

Called the FYE where I'd bought it while out of town on business. They told me I could return it to any FYE, so I took it to the store in Nashville up from Broadway and unfortunately none were in stock.

Of course, I have to wonder how prevalent this defect is, so I'm thinking if I can locate one at a different store, I'll keep a little portable DVD player in the truck to test it before I take it home...

Again, extremely disappointing. Real lack of quality control at the record company, to say the least. How is such a thing even possible???

Huh, that's odd, 'cause I'd watched the Sykes-era Thin Lizzy video portion for a bit, again, there was no sound, but it was John Sykes et. al. with the stage set from the Thunder and Lightning tour alright...

Bought another copy of the Thin Lizzy DVD at the Best Buy in Brentwood, popped it into the baby's DVD player in the truck while in the parking lot, works as it should — has sound on the concert footage. Can't wait to watch...

Thin Lizzy, in my view, was one of the most stunningly brilliant bands ever — the songs, the vocals, the lyrics, the playing, every single thing was spot on. Nothing lacked in any department. There will never be another band like them. What a catalog of work... 8)

I agree, never again will a band be so cohesive as Lizzy. I really liked all the different line-up's for different reasons, but, the '74 -'78 era was my fav. I have the Sykes era footage. John really wails on some of it.

I honestly think I equally like any period Thin Lizzy as Phil Lynott's personality and style were so strong. Man, what a loss... January 4, 1986.

Agreed. Phil's lyric's like "Little Girl In Bloom" off of 'Vagabonds of the Western world', were so compassionate, as they were about him thinking about how his Irish white mother must have felt being so young and pregnant carrying a black Brazilian mans child. I love Phil's vocals, as well as his bass on most all Lizzy songs. He was one of the greatest songwriters.

Just an update and PSA on the Thin Lizzy DVD: Got around to watching the DVD. Put it in the DVD player in the family room and when the concert started . . . no sound! :x :?

Of course, when I bought a new copy at Best Buy, I fired it into the portable DVD player my daughter uses to watch those Elmo DVDs and it worked. So now, I'm thinking that this has to be user error.

Went to the Set Up and there are two options for sound, something called "DTS 5.1" and the more familiar "Dolby Stereo" or something like that. The DVD is defaulted to this DTS sound, so I changed it to Dolby and then it worked just fine. So now I feel bad that I returned a perfectly good DVD as defective.

In any case, when it comes to all the latest consumer electronics, I'm something of a luddite. The DVD player in our family room is an astonishing five years old. I don't own an Ipod, a blueberry or whatever they're called and see no reason to change anything as long as it works as intended and as I understand it.  I suspect that other tube amp aficionados might be similar in their purchasing habits, but I could be wrong... :|

I am nothing like my neighbor friend who has every sort of updated full-on bells and whistles gee whiz electronic gadget. He has the latest, greatest everything and when it comes to watching a show or movie, it's like preparing for a Mars lander launch. I can barely comprehend what he's doing half the time and all sorts of graphs and bars and commands appear on the screen while he fiddles with his Mission Control console.

I mean, it's a DVD, you put it in the DVD player and it should play, right? Or so I thought. Because I'm decidely behind the times, little did I know that I don't have whatever specially encoded sound that I'm supposed to have.

So again, a heads-up on that. My mistake!

Well, outlier, if you can't handle modern electronics, maybe you should confine your guitar amps to plexis and other "stone age" gear...

Thank you for the PSA on the default setting on that DVD. If I pick up a copy, hopefully I'll remember your heads-up announcement and not go through what you did.

Found some cool interviews with Philip and Gary Moore, also Neil Murray a kickass bass player in his own right:
So tragic the potential of Phil's career, he was so talented and Bob Dylan told Huey Lewis, while Phil was still alive, that he considered Lynott, one of the finest poets/musical artists there was...On my website..plug I ahve my story of Rory and Phil, the two sons of Ireland and I hope to write more about Philip and his masterful work, as a large part if me is Irish, I'm not saying what part.   , also I am half Swedish, so that explains a lot, but Ireland's music I studied while in community college getting credits for my nursing school and I read a lot about Celtic music and it to me is a pure form of blues, if you like in it's own way. The story telling is key and that's why I also love to tell a story with my posts, life is all about that and we all are constantly learning and absorbing and hopefully growing. This gives hope to the future generations that the past is not forgotten...let's hope not.. :( :(

I agree with the celtic/blues relation. Many people just dont see it ('FEEL' it I mean 8) ) That celtic vibe, especially the American 'Appalacian Mountain' variety of Scot/Irish descent variety (Doc Watson !, who some in my family have known for over 50 yrs) has TONS of pure SOUL, for lack of a better word.

I didnt know that Dylan said that, but I understand why he did. Even Gene Simmons, during an 'In The Listening Room' interview, said that Thin Lizzy were very good, and that, unlike Iron Maiden, had very rememorable melodies, and I think Paul Stanley mentioned how they alway's told 'GREAT STORIES' with thier songs.

Thin Lizzy were a band without peer. A shame that they aren't regarded with the same reverence as . . . Michael Jackson or someone like that, but I suppose that's to be expected.

January 4, 1986 wasn't a day that generated the same sort of floor-pounding hysteria and wall-to-wall media coverage, but I suppose that's to be expected too. They just were too good...

And I guess that's just the nature of truly great music such as this: It's going to fly over the heads of those who think something like David Archuleta on some goofy karaoke show is the top tier of talent, the absolute pinnacle of achievement. So what can you expect? :?
