Sorry to hear about your Super buddy, I was seriously hoping that things would turn out good on that end. I had to hear and to play my Alnico 12" Tone Tubby Alnico hempcone speaker in my Fender 66' BFDR for awhile (maybe 15 hrs. of play) until the speaker broke in before I could really appreciate hemp cone speakers. Guys like Los Lonely Boys, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana can't all be wrong about using TT speakers. Eric Clapton even gave input to Tone Tubby for the manufacture of an EC specific Tone Tubby speaker which is now available, so Eric must have found some value and worthiness in their product line.
Yeah, I got turned on to Beck by a guy a friend and I were going to for guitar lessons. I saw a posting in Sam Ash “ I can teach you how to play like Blackmore, Clapton, Beck…”. Blackmore being my idol at the time was all I had to hear so we went for lessons. He taught us You Fool No One, Burn, Highway Star…great stuff for us star struck kids. He was (still is) a great player. He asks if we’re into Beck, only thing we knew of Beck at the time was the beginning of ”You Know What I Mean”. Us being hard rock guys thought that sounded kinda goofy, I think my buddy said something like Beck? He plays like disco stuff, right? Our teacher laughed and turned us on to the JB Group stuff and the Truth stuff with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood and BBA. Even the early Yardbird’s stuff had some very original and creative playing. Then we were able to appreciate the talent on Wired and Blow by Blow. Jailhouse Rock is STILL the heaviest bass line ever recorded IMO.

I’m not big on Santana nowadays ( I think his is the only music ego bigger than ed…) but he did have great tone back in the day and obviously Clapton knows a thing or two about tone. Also loved LLB first lp. Great tones so I’ll have to look into those Tubby’s!!!

Great news, Dave!
Thanks Mike, check out this Creamback demo video from Pete Thorn. Played through the Metro True replica 4X"12 is a mind melding experience, it is the speaker I have dreamed of since the olde days!

Another trend that is common amongst '80's era rock guitarists is that many have reverted to a basic blues style. I remember when DeMartini did that at the height of his popularity. Its like he KNEW he had copied George Lynch way too much on 'Out Of The Cellar' and 'Invasion Of Your Privacy',so he tried to revert to a rootsier style from 'Dancin' Undercover' to the present.
I dont mind blues based styles if they are earnest,I just dont like it when artist 'cop out' and stop growing. I remember talking to Al Estrada about that one time. It seemed like there wasnt anyone from the '80's genre that was still tearing it up, tone and playing-wise. Seemed like most were into clean Fender with a tube screamer set ups.

I think this guy is flying the flag pretty high concerning a great '80's guitar tone and stye. He sounds real good imo. Don has put some weight on, and even though he cant get the high/powerful range happening, he still has that unique smooth and melodic vocal style

IMHO it was Stevie Ray that was majorly responsible for this phenomenon. Though Rory was working in a similar area of tone and feel for decades before Stevie became really succesful, I think it was really Stevie that made this happen.

Agreed, Stevie most definately started that trend, but, you only got a few 'nods' in his direction from the '80's crowd at that time (lets say '85-'90). It was after he passed when the cloning earnestly started. Grunge pretty much slew the '80's dragon by '92, and soloing was gone in the rock realms. I think guy's took refuge in the blues room for awhile (many stayed there).

I remember thinking that Stevie sounded 'Old and dated' when I first heard him back in the early/mid '80's.It was David Bowie's 'Lets Dance' and 'China Girl' (I liked that one, prefered Nile Rogers rhythm to Stevies leads though). All the writers for 'GFTPM' and Guitar Player, Guitar World, etc were in thier '30's/'40's at that time (mid '80's) so they definately werent 'new school' like I was at that time, so they ate up the pure blues players.I did revert back to earlier styles by the '90's,but it was more '60's/'70's funk/r&B than Texas Road House. Stevie was very pivitol,no doubt.

Definitely true. In an era when shred was dying and grunge was about to rise, you heard artists like Pearl Jam copping a SRV style loud gurgling Strat lead sound on the solo to "Even Flow" cause the guitar player was clued in, even though the fans didn't know where he was getting it from, but making it acceptable to the masses nonetheless. Good point.

Uli Roth on the '70's era Scorpions albums inadvertantly turned me on to Hendrix, not SRV. I prefered the Chilli Peppers to Pearl Jam cause they did something with that pentatonic based tonality. The absolute least favorite guitar style is that ' white boy' blues style that was prevalent in the '90's. I just dont like the underlying country twang that is in it.

Over 20 years ago I had a groupie-age GF that turned me on to the RHCP when her and her friend were watching the "Funky Monks" VHS documentary of the making of "Blood,Sugar, Sex, Magic". When I heard Frusciante's Strat sound playing those funky chords and saw it plugged into those old Marshalls, I stopped in my tracks! They were never better IMO than that era. Guitar genius. :listen:
