I suppose it may sound like the sound of the hall at the Fillmore...

The more a player knows, the more they can pull ideas from, like a Rodgers and Hart melody from 1934 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Moon_(song" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)) slapped in the middle of a Blues/Rock song.

Guys like Jeff Beck etc know so many old? things that they can use and mix up and get ideas from.

The Cream members knew a fair bit of Jazz stuff but they were playing Blues/Rock and knowing about Jazz stuff gives a wider range of things to do in Blues/Rock or any Rock or Metal or Country etc.

If someone just uses box pentatonics and the same old licks or just knows EVH licks, well that's all they will know and if they have to play an interesting solo over basic chord changes for a new band song, then they might have real trouble doing it.

i just meant it was in the signal chain, not necessarily used. the loading down of the signal via the wah's old bypass style may contribute to the sound, that is if he had it in the chain even during songs it isn't used. the blue moon reference is pretty cool, never noticed that
