yeah man... Yngwie really brought forth the use of two extra notes, the 2nd and the 6th as well he also let us hear how kewl a major 7th sounded.. sure Richie and Roth to name a few did it before.. blah blah.. but Yngwie finalized it, so to speak.

I was also a MalmsteenOholic for the longest time and am only now sober.. he will remain one of the all time greats though. His tone was incredible on the early albums. ( I also have a guilty pleasure in the Eclipse album which i absolutely love) He has gotten a bit long in the tooth for me now and overplays without crafting the cool leads anymore but what the hell, I could never slam him because of his influence on the guitar world and his chops.

To me that sounds like a bunch of noise.Jake's a great player but that did nothing for me.

IMO, Zakk's best material is his slower, acoustic stuff. The Book of Shadows CD has some killer songs and is played with a lot of emotion.

i don't know why anyone would knock Yngwie. sure he can be a prick but man, his vibrato, ability, as well as his pioneering of a style should be ( at the very least) respected.

Yeah, I mean I heard "I'll See the Light Tonight" and I thought it was lame..then "Leviathan" on the Guitars that Rule the World CD came out and I started listening to Yngwie. I love his vibrato. Hell, even Vai said Yngwie had the most perfect vibrato. If a guy is impressing someone like Vai, one should probably take note.....like you said Mark, you arent listening to Yngwie to hear him write a #1...you are listening to hear something thats gonna make you woodshed for the next month.....

I loved Randy & when Jake came along I was thrilled because Ozzy had found another great guitar player.

Jake is under rated and you always hear about Zakk. Zakk is an incredible player and musician but I never got in to him. I was sorry to see Jake go but was excited when the first album came out with Zakk. What a huge let down.

Kind of lost interest in Ozzy after that. :?
Man, its like you guys are reading my mind....the first 2 albums that Zakk did were cool...while "No Rest" was like one huge song (most of them sounded VERY similar to me), I was like ok, this kid (haaha) is finding his niche. "No More Tears" was a maturation...and then after that, it was "Ok, I get it. YOU like Pinch Harmonics, you like the wah (although not as much as Kirk), and you like the Pentatonic scale, ok, great...now do something else. I know that there are some really different things that he did with BLS, but they dont do anything for me.

JEL, OTOH, never got a fair shake. Ultimate Sin was a great album, guitar wise. I just wish Ozzy couldve stayed off the coke long enough to help write some better tunes. That first Badlands album was tight.

see now for me. i appreciate vai's ability. he is a composer. a great contribution to the art of guitar. but i cant listen to him too long. his intonation and vibrato are not what like about vai.

I agree with Mark about Vai, my listening tolerance for him, post DLR band is limited as well. Yngwie's vibrato and bending is my favorite aspect of his playing as well as his use of scales and his note 'flurries', ect.
It is all 'about' him as well (vai) but Yngwie is not as humble as Vai, although Steve is 'confident' let us say about his abilities.
Yngwie is the undisputed maestro and grandfather of the neo-classical/rock/metal genre imho and I have periods when it is even too much for me   , but I always come back.
At one time I was listening to him non-stop.A lot of guitarists go through a Yngwie 'phase', but leave it, not stay in their addiction as me   !
I am very interested in hearing the new album, although I am not a huge Doogie White fan, he plays his actors role well, as he describes it.
Imo the issue with JLT was he was as big a star, for lack of a better term as Yngwie, so they would only have a limited paternership.
It limits Yngwie somewhat, his total control approach, but it's the only way he can roll, he is uncomfortable in a band role. :)

Way to Hijack!

Now back to your original programming...TBH, I never really got into Jake all that much when he was with Ozzy but man, when Badlands came out, I ate it up. I saw him on that first tour also...Ray Gillan...just a monster vocalist and a tragic loss. Jake...the guy had the tone...JCM800s and a couple of boss pedals - overdrive and delay and more stage presence than you could shake a stick at. It's funny, years later I hear where a lot of his influences came through in that stuff...The end of High Wire definitely had to have been inspired by Cactus' "Evil".

Nitro, sorry I will lurk back to the Malmsteen Only thread, oops I meant Yngwie J Malmsteen thread, but that's the beauty of the artist section, most of the 'rules' don't apply :D

Jake was a keeper for Ozzy but slipped through his grasp, as so many things did back then...

What got me about Jake E. Lee was that his stuff sounded like a continuation from the previous stuff from Randy. Especially Bark at the Moon. To me that sounds like a Randy song. Jake had the feel down like no other since IMHO. No one will replace RR, but JEL did about as good as possible.
