cool shot 308! we used to do one of the tunes off that album. nobody knew what the hell it was! man, i was just thinkin' bout JB again this morning. i need to dig out "blow by blow","wired","there and back",
"guitar shop" & dammit i may even blow the dust off the turntable (if it still works!) & put on the JB group & the album with the oranges. RIGHTEOUS GUITAR at it's finest...

Does anyone know what year Beck's black Les Paul standard was ? I alway's loved the sound he got out of it. It looked like it was the perfect guitar for him. That les Paul strapped on Beck looked perfect.

It's a '54. It was originally a Goldtop with P-90 pickups but it was repainted and had standard humbuckers added before JB bought it at "Strings & Things" in Memphis as a used intstrument. It looks black, but it's not - it's "oxblood"...a very, very dark red color. Gibson actually made a '54 oxblood Les Paul for a while that was inspired by Jeff's guitar.
Fuck it.

Earg's got the facts, jack!

Photo's don't do the "Oxblood" color justice at all. It's like a very deep wine red / burgundy / chocolate. Gorgeous color set off by cream trim.

Damn, a '54 huh. I was hoping it was like a '69-72 or something. Cause I someday might could swing that, but never a '54. Add to that, I'm sure that guitar had some nice 'old growth' Honduran mahogany as well, which like you mentioned, is very hard to come by. I'm hoping thier are still a few 'jems' still being made by Gibson. I've never had a real 'Les Paul' before.

I would never of guessed it was dark oxblood colored. Thanks for the info.

Also, I wonder what that slanted bridge did to the sound ? Maybe made string tensions a little different. I have been listening to "Head for backstage pass" off of 'Wired'. Great tone and chops on that one.

Thanks for the link Chief! I don't know when Gibson made that guitar, but I would buy one! Interesting that it really is a "Jeff Beck model", in that it has the same neck profile and wrap-around bridge that the '54 had - but only Jeff's '54 was Oxblood with humbuckers...e.g., it's an "uncredited" JB model.
BUT don't forget to drop a Seymour Duncan JB pickup in the bridge with a 250K volume pot!!! (killer tone!!!)
Fuck it.

Earg, they are still in production as far as I know, cuz, ummmmm.........

...I got one! 8)

I got a hair up my butt one day and did a google search on "Jeff Beck Les Paul". I got an ebay hit for a guy selling one of these. I had no idea that they existed either. I contacted the guy and it turned out that he was a collector / dealer literally just two towns over.... Guess it was destiny. I stared at that guitar on the Blow by Blow cover for years. Had to have it! The neck is pretty chunky. Some days I like it, some I don't. I don't like the Burst Buckers in it though and I have a pair of WCR Goodwoods waiting to in. Haven't had any tuning or intonation issues with the wraparound bridge which surprised me.

The only thing is, IF I bought a '54 Oxblood - I'd HAVE to buy one of the signature series JB strats...it's like crack, but more rewarding and more or less addicting...soooooo wtf?!!!

Jeff is probably laughing right now...he thinks I am funny....

Btw, I have his personal email address - believe it or not!

Don't ask.
Fuck it.

Eargasm, you haven't heard of the famous Oxblood ??
I was lucky enough to see and hear it in person, back when I saw BBA in London. It is the only LP I am lusting over, R9, R8, nah give me the blood anyday  .
It is kind of like a Junior , but with a maple top, the wraparound bridge gives increased acoustic loudness.

Hey Yng. To tell you the truth, I'm a little shocked by all this. I thought Gibson made that '54 Oxblood a while back, and that now it's been discontinued - but as Chief pointed out - I'm wrong! It's a custom shop guitar that has been in production since at least 1997. But there are some really interesting things about it such as the "solid, non-weight relieved mahogany back" (?), the aluminum (TONE!!!!) wraparound bridge, and the "bumblebee" tone caps.
I guess I am kind of shocked at the attention to details that Gibson used for this model. I mean, this thing is really legit and faithful to JEFF'S original. Way to go Gibson!
I even found this model that actually has a brazilian rosewood fingerboard!
http://www.gbase.com/Stores/Gear/GearDe ... em=1620742

From Gibson's site the '54 Oxblood is listed as a "Limited Historic" model:
http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/produ ... /list.html

I have to admit that being such a JB nut, I am tempted to drop some cash on a '54 Oxblood and then one of his signature Fender strats...
God...this shit just never stops!
Fuck it.
