Jesus...I just randomly put on the Stevie Ray Vaughan t-shirt I got from his final tour, which I haven't worn in years. The final date on the back of the shirt is East Troy,WI.
It was my privelige to meet him 3 days after my 18th birthday on June 13,1990...I'll never forget him. Here is a super rare clip of that show where the band performs "Collins Shuffle"...

Stevie sort of made 'Old School' NEW SCHOOL again.
Stevie got me more into 'feeling the pure tone of an amp, instead of playing TO the distortion.

That is a great way of looking at it. To me, that's exactly what he did...but I would add that he was really into the pure feel and tone of the guitar-the attack, the string snapping on the Albert King licks, the sheer physical power in his hands (bending all three strings when he really leaned into the Albert King licks), plus the control of dynamics through right hand pick and finger attack...all the stuff in the hands and the heavy strings on the strats with standard tremolo. That had a big impact on me and just about everybody else-a complete 180 from the hair metal Floyd Rose super strats and the guys playing .008's. Not to say that it was better, just VERY different from the pack back then.Tone Slinger wrote:Stevie sort of made 'Old School' NEW SCHOOL again.

Rory had a very similar attack, but his note choice and phrasing was way different than Stevie. Now you can't go anywhere without seeing people faking wear on their guitars...Stevie really made that fashionable. Ed too, but really Stevie and his imitators like Guy Forsythe, Kenny Wayne Shepherd,Ian Moore,Jonny Lang etc. made that whole thing happen IMHO...

Schawheat clip garbeaj! Happy Birthday indeed! I stayed on your clip and followed and found this one... Pure Clean Marshall 4-Holer Tone! I do believe he's running into the Lo Side on Channel I there... pause at 1:44. He ends up milkin' it.

I love his Tweed sounds though. He was a meteor that blazed right through the 80s digital coke and pink hair metal and left a trail of ... grunge.
Part farm boy, part gangster pimp, part flamenco cowboy gunslinger, just a regular dude I suppose. Still amazing to this day, way gone from the "tired old thing" syndrome. Always live, and new.
God Bless Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Exactly right. Not many people catch that, and almost no one caught it then, but Mike McCready of Pearl Jam was playing Stevie Ray Vaughan licks and tones on Ten,Temple of the Dog and lots of other Pearl Jam stuff...Not really Hendrix quality, but more blatant Stevie stuff.somethin'else wrote:I love his Tweed sounds though. I do think that Stevie's playing with it's relative lack of an overt delay sound and only the sparest of reverb for things like "Lenny" and "Riviera Paradise" really had a great impact on guitar players across the board in grunge and so much of popular music in the 90s in general...
