High gain/stock 2203 New Cubase Clip

After struggling with lack of fidelity with Audacity, I finally ponied up and got Cubase LE4. It seems to repoduce the nuances of the amp more like what I hear standing in front of it. We're still learning on the Cubase capabilities but for a QUICKIE clip I'm pretty pleased.

We literally threw one SM57 up off axis some and the amps master is at 1(TV volume) Pre-gain at 6. Guitar was an Epiphone Les Paul custom with stock pickups.

Give it a listen let me know what you think.

Here's the same track with a little VH reverb.

Darn good clip for being stock and getting the
EVH thing

What sound are you after? The EVH, your own sound??
I'm a fan of the Cubase.

Sounds good to me :!:
Yeah the Epiphone's pickups are stock. It's a 2001 Custom made in Korea, the guitar has a alot of wieght to it like a Gibson LP IMO.

The amp is all Marshall 2203 with an extra gain stage addded, similar to the Jose mod, with some of my value tweaks. I have a thread over in Do it yourself amps about it's build. There is alot of gain on tap, I probably should have turned it down for the clip but it was low volume as it was as the house was full upstairs with people, didn't want to blow them out.

We weren't moving the speaker much at all and we still need to mess around with optimum mic placement.

We'll be turning the master up to were it shines(about 2 and up) and more clips as we get the recording thing dialed in with effects and such.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks Stan! It's nice to finally hear the amp more as I hear it standing in front of the amp with out that distant digital high end harshness that Audacity gave it with nice enveloping low end that hits, I find the tone alot warmer and more real sounding.

We can't wait to figure out dual micing to thicken the tone up and delay one track some. I say we as this is a collaboration with my brother who is more computer and recording savy. I made a few spec changes to the amp that we're really pleased with. The Cubase is alot more user friendly than the Protools I have.

Sounds great! I like Cubase very user friendly. I can't wait to upgrade to 5 hopefully by the end of the year.

Thanks again for all your information on your setup, as it convinced me to try the Lexicon/Cubase setup. My brother wouldn't let me take the Alpha from his house where we recorded this amp at(amp is his). He bought the alpha from me on the spot.

The Cubase is very intuitive and we got pretty far with effects and such and we haven't even printed the Owners Manual yet and really read up on it's capabilities.

We had alot of fun with it last night. I can't wait to hear the result when we open the amp up a little bit and push some SPL's with Reverb/delay. We had a great plate reverb that sounded awesome last night but I decided to post a dry clip, the effects are very pro sounding, not like an add on, if you know what I mean.

I decided to upgrade a little and bought the Lexicon Omega 4 channel inerface today.

Thanks again Sandoval I agree Cubase rocks!

Stan,
It's Steinberg Cubase LE4, I see a few interfaces are using it, I seen that the Presonus Firebox is using it. Probably the same one or close.

The program is not a taxing on the CPU usage, my protools was always freezing up it is very demanding on you computers RAM. Alot of people just run a computer just to run Protools. I have alot of other thing running in the background with mine, internet and other programs. I'm sure cubase 5 offers alot more with better quality but right now we really like the LE and if it more than sufficient for what we are doing.

Yeah Both my brother and I find it alot easier so far.

What are you using now?

Here's a couple of our latest clips with the amp. A little VH montage for you. We've been messing around more in Cubase. Track with Reverb and Delay.

Thanks Stan, I just picked up a Sennheiser E906 mic, I can't wait to try it out. They get some really great reviews versus the SM57! I have to do some tweaking to my Metro 68 as well this weekend.

Hopefully we can record some more clips this weekend!
