Heres my latest attempt at the Van Halen 1 tone, I think it sounds pretty good considering the volume levels Im playing at ( I live in an apartment so I cant really crank it) and considering the guitar is a les paul, I think its pretty close. Let me know what you think:

Metro '68 100 watt, boosted some with and MXR EQ, hotplate on load setting, line out into 50 watt bassman head, speakers are celestion G12H30 reissues.

the metro has sylvania 12ax7s and 6ca7s in it, shared cathode 1k 250uf, everything on ten, bass on zero. variaced down to about 110 volts.

I think it could use some more tweaking on the Eq, theres some overtones in there that arent the best but overall I think it sounds pretty good.

Yeah, if you get rid of a little of those "fizzy" type overtones, then that woud be all there is to it. Maybe its the increased signal chain of going through that bassman ? You ,to my ears are real close. You got the exact amount of saturation as that 1st VH album. Lose the "fizzy" overtones, and your there.
