Curious as to what values one could use that are inbetween the 56/250 and the 33/500 ? I liked both, but the older, 56/250 spec a little better.

The 56k250pf does give it some more EVH boing effect when directly compared to the 33K500pf.

I noticed this when I switched to the older tonestack in class a plexi I removed the 330uf from v2 and went with the .68uf.

I assume the clips were straight in no eq front boost?

yeah im really liking the older tone stack now,itw weird but i have never tried the older tone stack with these speakers before, when i tried it before it was with heritage greenbacks which have different mids than the weber clones..so far im digging it,i may try the .1s in the ouput section too.

.1u in the output section for 12 series evh. .022u just dont enough girth for my ears on evh 12 series tone. dave friedman would agree as well.

have to admit i've been second guessing my putting the 022s in the PI as well - listening to older clips and hearing... well... girth is a good word for it. bu i think there might be just a tad of the constipatedness to it like the low end is suffocating the breath out of it... making it softer than wood.

question - do you hear "wood" in VH I and II? i'm thinking not - but i'm curious what you guys think - it's about how we are defining "wood."

Maybe if you went back to the 100K plate resistors it may reduce the gain just a smidge, i like your tone either way. But the wood EVH clip you refered to and posted had less gain than your current setup. Just throwing ideas out to get your amp to woodville. I still think the EVH Largo, MD clip was a 1959 with 6550's dimed into load box then reamped. I guess hotter 6ca7's having more headroom could account for that too. I could be wrong but it definitely is a cleaner less hairy tone than what I hear at the 83 US festival clips. The sylvania 6CA7 did have 6550 plates in them if you take a look at their contruction. My old 2203 with 6550 got very woody when cranked. Just throwing stuff out there.

My ears tell me ED's tone became woody around Diver Down and very woody on 1984 about the time of the Largo show. Also there was also a reduction in gain.

I read somewhere around that time his prized plexi never hit the road and he was using late 70's early 80 1959's into load boxes them reamped. I have seen a couple of pics showing mostly newer heads for some shows. I wonder if he ever used 6550's at times. the 6550 tubes is as heavy duty as they come.

It's been said by the 1984 album ED's 68 was not very healthy as in1978 from theyears of abuse.

funny you mention that. This gene simmons (6550 ?) voodoo queen demo is woody in a way, and a very cool tone. but the '67 SB specs/dagnal seems to be a way to get those fat big notes without the bass and treble. I recently turned a metal panel into a semi 67 SB and it's a tone monster. v1 .68,220 piggyed over top,820k. same on v2a, .1 chickletcaps over .02's in PI, 500pf bright cap, 47k off speaker jack and kept the metal panel 33k tone stack. sweet combo, not too soft, not too hard, not too dark not too bright.

Yeah, Super Bass, like , I'm assuming "Band Of Gypsies" was recorded with. Hendrix had retubed his Super Leads using 6550's in early '69, but on BOG's, he was clearly not using 6550's. Sounded like EL-34/Super Bass circuit. Very "Woody" tone to me, as compared to say Woodstock, which sounded very 6550 Super Leadish. EVH, had his most wood imo, on VH 2. I hear a similarity in tone in "BOG's and VH 2. Super Bass/single coils(Hendrix BOG's) Super Lead/humbucker (EVH VH 2). Not as much gain on either album. I make an analogy of that "Woody dynamic" tone as having semi-sharp teeth, but biting down HARD, as compared to say the first VH album, which would have Very sharp teeth, but not biting down as hard. I also think EL-34 's would be better than 6ca7's for wood, since your not going for as much gain.

excellent analogy man - that captures the essence of it!
