2005 '67 clone sound clips

Post by peter25 » Mon Sep 13, 2010 5:54 pm

A long, long time ago I got my Metro '67. I bothered lots of people with questions. The result is still on this forum in http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3292 here. I never had made any good clips. So here it is. Please don't mind the playing though. The recordings were made on a sunday afternoon in a barn somewhere in The Netherlands. We were just having fun and were not being serious. Many mistakes, but loads of fun. I was always telling my friends to make their own Metro amp, but they needed more to be convinced beside some good YouTube clips. So I dragged my amp for over 60 miles to let them hear it first hand. My friend just ordered his '69 Metro kit, so I guess they liked it. :D

I know there are a lot of EvH fans on the forum so I forced my friend to play a lick he just learned the day before. He only rehearsed with his drummer once so please be kind, although I think it sounds good. You can hear it's a '67 and not a '68. And no EvH sound was ever to be copied. The Jam was just me and the drummer. Never played with him before, which you can also notice.

The whole idea is actually to give people, who want to buy a Metro more of an idea of what a '67 clone sounds like.

Gear used on Unchained: Fender strat with ’69 pu’s and a Metro ’67.
Gear used in Jam: Fender strat with ’69 pu‘s into a Hartman Silicon fuzz, RMC3 wah and Sweetsound Ultra Vibe. This into the ’67.
Plugged into the upper bright channel.
Cab is JCM900 1960 with Celestion G12T75's.
Both clips were recorded with shure 57’s.

No disrespect, but I'm building a '67 and I hope it sounds better than that; Yours sounded really thin and non-Marshall-y to me. What component values are you using, if you don't mind me asking?

I know how to convert a '67 or Super Bass to '68 Lead specs, but wonder if I'm already doomed since I have the '67 power & output transformers? Anybody out there have any idea about this?

I don't need the "EVH" sound, but wouldn't mind at least the Free, AC/DC or Led Zeppelin sound(s). Any info would be appreciated.

Lastly, I'm sure some values could be tweaked on your amp to get it closer to "classic" Marshall crunch, roar & harmonic sustain... :?

Hey, too bad you don't like the amp. You can check pretty much everything in the link that's in the first post. Oh those bands did use Humbuckers... maybe that's doing it more for you. Another thing, this more a blues/rock amp as a rock/metal amp. 67 was a transition year, mine is early 67. The ones Metro sells now are mid 67 I guess... So don't throw away your trannies yet. It will work out just fine.

that's a late 67 amp. early 67s were super 100 amps and black flags. i guess some of the brightness comes from the speakers

Ok this might even make it worse, but I just recorded the same amp with same guitar through a different cab (1x12 Celsestion). Played your songs. And this is what it is. I love it, but taste obviously is subjective.

Recorded with my PC mic... Trying to get old school Marshall sound. Oh Master Volume is on 1.

I agree with both of you Roe and Peter; That sounded better and with humbuckers it probably will have a little more "kick" to it; Thanks for recording the extra stuff for us.

I'll probably use Groove Tubes GT-EL34M tubes graded "3" or "4" in my '67 build for earlier break-up, plus I'm putting a '68-'69 preamp circuit in place of the Bass channel which I don't like anyway. Probably use .022 caps in the phase inverter section. I just bought some NOS Mullard Mustards for that.

Anyone know what a 100-watt Super Bass or '67 Super Lead sounds like with Drake trannys after being converted to '68 Super Lead specs? I would be interested to know. Thanks-

Some new clips. Same setup. 1x12 cab with strat. No humbucker... Mic is a 2$ headset mic. I took your advice at changing back to more normal specs. I changed the secondary tap of the trannie to 500 volts instead of 475volts on the plates. (extra taps were made on the PT for lower voltages on plates). Also changed to a 27k NFB resistor. Gonna try a 33k next. There was a 47k in before which also sounded nice. But I'd like something in between. Second one was made with the improvements. First clip was made before any changes. Please let me know what you think. Oh on both clips a hardwire rv7 was used. Nothing else.
