Marshall 4010 combo

Post by JimiJames » Wed Nov 13, 2013 12:04 pm

I am very familiar with, but with the the stack input version (only)
What years did these run in the '80's exactly ? ('81-'89?) - but with this stock speq. (only)?
Could I find an answer going by looking through Marshall Schematic's ? Thanks !Image

(I have a Fender BF Vibrolux that's had a push/pull MV mod done to it... I just threw it on the selling/trading block for cheap to fund this Marshall combo.)

Yes. The 65 watt Celestion, I've owned a couple of these amps..

No on the speaker, yes on the release date of the amp.

Mine came with a a G12M-70, (I think - as I am not 100% now). I replaced it with a Heritage G12-65.

The only things I can add is pretty useless, but here goes...

The 4010 (and the 4104) is identical to a 2204 except an added capacitor on the mid pot, and a different resistor on the presence circuit to counter the changes that occur with an open backed combo cab, as opposed to a closed back 4X12 or 2X12 cab.

The only changes that occured were around April/May 1984 when all the amps changed over to the horizontal layout, with less preamp filtering, and higher filtering on the screens. There was also an extra capacitor added to v1 (on the PCB) from plate to cathode on the first gain stage, to help prevent oscillation.

Oh, actually, there was one more change that occurred... The power transformers on the 50watters changed spec sometime in late'81 early '82. The earlier ones had a lower B+, the latter ones had a higher B+ but did NOT add an extra resistor to bring the preamp voltages down in line with where they should be. These amps can sound quite a bit more aggressive as a result, as well as less compressed, and often less gainy.
So I like purple, okay!!!!!!

Useless ?
Awesome, Brother ! GREAT info's here. I appreciate the mini history as this is what I am looking for on these amps....
... on this here amp forum !

So, April/May 1984 (vertical) stack input.
O.K. that's where I look for and prior...

BTW & AFAIK the ones that I am interested in ALL had G12-65's and that's what I am targeting.
My last bit of info searchin' is that; in these models that were April/May 1984 and prior, what years came with Brown grillcloth and what years for the Black.
I am still trying to find out from what years the entire line was in production - '81-'89 ?

I'm pretty sure they DID run throughout that timeline ('81-'89 that is).

Brown grillecloth isn't brown at all, it is faded black (take the baffle boards out and you will see on the bits that haven't been exposed to sunlight). It was a different supplier or same supplier using a different dye, but it was only a temporary thing as it only occurred in 1985 and a final few 1986 amplifiers.

All G12-65's had disappeared by early 1982. Shame, as the 70's sound truly horrid in open backed cabs.

And yes, by May '84 all amps were horizontal. There will be a few from April, but of course dating anything this accurately is near impossible and relies on the build labels holding reliable info.
