Two bypass caps on V2a, what does that do?

Post by tone? » Thu Sep 12, 2013 12:46 pm

Since George's and Dave Friedman's findings on EVH amp I have always wondered what does bypassing V2a do with a .68uf cap AND a lets say 220uf cap??

I tried it with aligator clips and couldnt tell much of a difference by just having one on

Looks like you just answered your own question.
The most important thing when tweaking and fine tuning the amp is what sounds and feels good to the player himself. We all use slightly different guitars, pickups, speakers and cabs, strings, cords, effects, iron, amp parts, etc... oh, and of course the fingers and hands.
There's a 0.68 mustard (V2A) in my amp and sometimes I bypass it with a sprague 25 or sprague 250uf, but I never bothered with removing it...

I think Friedman uses 3 caps their if I remember right. Some of the 12000 series had a 330uf there. 69 spec has a .68uf there, and the mod 5 uses a 25uf. I like the 330uf.

I tried using a 330uf on a JTM 45 build once, but it became muddy. I tried a 220uf , and kept going lower, but the the biggest I could put was a .68uf. Looking back now I wonder if I increasing the V3 cap would have allowed me to go higher.
