Definately pre '68. I'll suggest early to mid '67.

FKH,
Your pictures show the identical rectifiers I had on my '67 JTM black Flag Superbass,the tag board is identical,and the grey caps,although mine has some unusual placement,so to speak.
Casper and Hansen,didn't they write the song Tax Free on Crash Landing,or Midnight Lightning it might have been.
Very cool check out the posts about my old amp under David Talkin/Yngwie 308 Black Flag JTM 100 watt Superbass!!

Love that '67. Lots of intersting transitional things happening there.

The size of the core on your 1203-80 for one thing

no cap on top

.68uf/4.7k presense components- though I doubt this is original

RS signal caps

Hi everybody !!
It has been a while...

Well, do any of you has ever seen a Drake 1201-99 on a superlead ??? The amp is a '67 (or '68) 10-series superlead, highly butchered through the years. I suspect the OT to be very old, but coming off a carlsbro or something, don't know. Anyway, if someone has any info, that would be very cool.

Maybe someone could clear this up. Someone said that Marshall had back in the early dAYS technicians working there?? I have always heard that this was not true but Ken B and Jim were actually pretty much just assemblers. They did copy the bassman for their first amp and since they got most if not all of their components from outside suppliers that it makes sense they werent "true tecs" but some guys building amps and trying to find what worked the best. Another reason for the many viarations along with the availibility of parts! Either way I think what they did was great and I really enjoy reading,learning and trying diffrent values/components in tyhe 69 100 watt Super Bass/Lead I bought and had to get in order! About to build a couple of Marshall replicas and can't wait to build/tweak/play them!!Just wish Marshall was still on the right page with their"tube amps"

I was wondering If I should ask this here but WTF anyway, Does George
or anybody here put together a 67 Black Flag spec metro Amp?

Of course using the spec. in this post.

Why don't i build it? well I work so much and have to catch up on my smaller clores and projects that I can't take the time when I get home to be consumed with, which is a good thing but not for me, and I'm not experienced and savey at it for a blue ribbon 67 BF I'm interested in.

anyway

I've call George and talked to him awhile ago and maybe I will, but the insight of what's s been done on this spec amp. I have the ability and space to play loud so I'm looking for all out topend. George did have some good things to say about the 67 and 68 100W he builds.

Flames has done 2 black flag builds. Greg Germino also offers the "Fillmore" which is a black flag spec. Both Flames and Greg and others have found these to be very "testy" with ghosting... Greg even had to up the filtering a bit to compensate. I believe back in the day, Marshall found the same thing, as they quickly changed the OT spec and th '67 10xxx series was born. The Black Flag builds were the first Marshall's that switched over to EL34 and that's where the ghosting came in and likely why they changed they OT shortly after. You can hear the second OT in George's '67 line (10xxx series), which is still one of my favorite sounding Marshalls.

I started a Black Flag build, but Brian Wallace and I ran into numerous problems with Heyboer getting the PT correct. No fault on Brian's part, Heyboer just kept sending the wrong voltages. I ran out of patience and converted that build to a JTM 45/100. He might have the PT straightened out by now, I'm not sure. I used Brian's iron for my JTM 45/100 and as always it rocks.

I'm sure Flames will chime in as he spent a good amount of effort battling the ghosting of his to Black Flags.

That OT is stock. 100W Marshall's did come with Drake OT's and PT's once in a while. The PT was a 1209-3.

Still trying to get the 1203-80's sorted out.

I think the sound clip of George's '67 was the one your speaking of, but
of course its not like being in the same room with it opened up.

Yeah, I've done a couple of them with different combinations of George's parts mixed with Brian's transformers.......there's really not much you can do with the ghosting but raise the filter cap values, the stock filtering was just so dang low for EL34 tubes. You might squeak by with the stock filtering if you only plan on playing at 6 or 7 on the volume (which honestly is where I think most guys back in the day were playing anyway, not on 10 like we've gotten ourselves programmed to do....)

As always, you can't really hear much of the ghosting on the recordings, but it's there!!!

The '67 BF SB I had that helped raise up enthusiasm had over 600 volts on the plates according to Flames, and I had never a problem with ghosting, but also a problem of playing guitar through it to get a decent Marshall sound, for a JTM 100. The transition amps, are just that and were cool, they are awesome
