1971 100 Superlead Opinions

Post by MakoML » Wed Dec 02, 2015 10:19 pm

Local collector is trying to raise funds for a vintage guitar purchase. He wants $1950 for this Marshall Full Stack. Its a 1971 100 watt Superlead head that has a fan in the cab and an extra couple holes in the back, and a couple jacks I'm not sure what are there for and if they were original or not. Don't have pics of the guts.

The cabs he says are a couple years newer............ I managed to date one the 25 watt 75hz Blackbacks to "DJ12" April 1976'. The cabs have slightly different grill cloth on each and the tolex is in road worn condition.

Anyone care to offer an opinion on this rig? Its only a couple hours drive to look at it, but if I go I need to have cash in hand if I want it. The cabs are what I am thinking are not that valuable compared to the head?

The vintage stuff value is something I'm still trying to get my head around. It seems there is nothing remarkable about the cabs or speakers other than age? The head may or may not have some really desirable transformers in it? I can't tell from the pics what has or hasn't been done to the head other than the fan.

Transformers, from a distance, appear to be original. Even with a couple of mystery holes in the back of the chassis and a fan, $1950 is not bad for a full stack. Whatever is not original inside can be fixed. You could get lucky and the cabs have all the original greenbacks. Have you seen what checkerboard cabs with greenbacks can go for nowadays?

The orange light on the back is most puzzling? What's up with that?!

He sold it before I could go physically look it over. The orange light on the back and the extra jacks kind of made me wonder what was going on inside that chassis. The cabs had 25 watt 75Hz blackbacks in them, he did send a pic of one cab without back on it to verify the speakers which he insisted were "creambacks" before I made him open it and send some pics.

I had him down to $1300 for the head only but decided to get greedy and try for the whole stack at $1500 and then he got an offer for $1750 and stopped returning my texts and calls.

Oh well, my search for a vintage budget Superlead head goes on.
