OT Wiring 1972 Super Lead - 2 extra wires?

Post by dommetro » Sat May 31, 2014 2:27 pm

Hi Folks, long time fan of this forum, and proud owner of 2 Metros!I just don't post much anywhere, so don't look at my numbers...!
I just recently bought a 1972 Super Lead after many years of trying to get a hold of one. I have just played it very lightly as I want to verify everything is OK with it first. Amongst other things, I'm stumped after much searching for an answer to this; the output transformer has a couple of extra wires I can't account for. I did find the post where George spelled out the wiring and color code. What I have is:

Primary:

White (Yel?) - primary
Brown - common
Red - Primary

Secondary:

Left side hole (when looking at it right side up on the secondary side):

Yellow (thick multi-strand wire) - 8 ohm tap
Brown ( thick solid core) - common? this goes to the output jacks paired with the next brown wire.
Brown ( regular size wire) - common

Right side hole looking at the secondary side:

Black (regular size wire) -4 ohm tap
Green (regular size wire) - 16 ohm tap
Green (thick solid core) - this one I found either disconnected or broken connection near the previous green wire.

So the reason for all this is that I found the thick green wire disconnected near the terminal 3 of the impedance selectorthat the other green wire is soldered to. Any ideas if it is supposed to be soldered there, and what are these two thick solide core wires that I haven't seen mentioned before.

Also, I assume these 72s should have a Dagnall C2668. Both trannies look right and original from other photos.

Thank you.

Anyone have any idea about this? There are no markings on the OT; it looks like there may have been a sticker on one of the bells, but hard to tell. Any help would be much appreciated!

Yes, the green and brown wires should be connected together. Could you send me some pictures of the amp to me at info@marstran.com?

Thanks again to Brian, here is some more info on the transformer. I take it this is not common knowledge, so may be useful to someone scratching their head when they expect 4 and they count 6!

" The solid wires are the actual wires from the secondary coil also known as self leads. This construction is the same as the early cloth covered wire C1998 OT's. The reason for the extra small wires is that there is an extra coil wound in the OT. This coil is then wired in parallel across the secondary coil. This is the same construction as the C1998 only the C1998 has this performed internally and you never see it."

So, does this OT carry the same C1998 number or does it have a different C number?

There are no markings on the transformer. It looks like there was a sticker at some point on one of the bells, but can't be sure. I think I read somewhere that it is common for identification to be rubbed or fallen off. I don't know enough about either the c2668 or c1998 (wiring, housing, etc) to be able to tell the difference.

I am far from an expert on these things, but to me the OT looks like a replacement. The bolts that clamp the bells on are at the corners which is often (but not always) a give away. Those odd brown grommets/vibration mounts are not stock and the solder joints on the selector have been redone (for whatever reason). So overall a replacement. If you look at a C1998 you will see the thick self leads and a finer wire soldered to to certain wires, presume those are ones talked about?

Wasn't the 2373 in between the 1998 and 2668???? For a couple years
