AFD100 vs. SL5 Filter Caps

Post by psklpt » Wed May 21, 2014 6:28 pm

Hi everyone,

Looking at the AFD100 & SL5 schematic, i noticed the filter caps were wayyyy smaller on the SL5 ;
For the Input Stage, Gain Stages and Buffer the AFD100 has 47uf/47uf/47uf.
Whereas the SL5 has respectively 10uf/10uf/22uf.

Question : is it possible to lower the AFD100's filter caps to SL5 specs? Or for "higher wattage" purpose those caps need to be bigger? :what:

It's just that the SL5 sounds so much more "organic" than his bigger brother !!!! :hairband:

Thanks for your help ! :worthy:

There's no problem with lower filtering. I much prefer it on my 50W marshall and would highly recommend it. Most old plexi's and fenders have lower filtering and most of the newer marshalls too.

I have the AFD100 schematic, but can't locate a SL5 schematic without signing up to other forums. Care to share please.

Thanks for your interest. I have attached the schematic.
So if i put 10uf/10uf/22uf in the preamp section of the AFD100 there won't be motoarboating or other issues?

No, there shouldn't be any motor boating. I've tried lower before, but the feel can get too soft. You might want to test different values and combos such as: 10/16/16, 10/16/22, or 10/22/22. You can also substitute 8uf for the 10uf with out issue.
