My first post so hello to all.
I'm in the market for a Metro 10,000 or 12,000 plexi or may be a 50w MK2 but I'm not sure which one I should buy?
Overdriven lead tones I like are: Uli Roth, Early Malmsteen, Van Halen, David Gilmour, Eric Johnson to name a few.
I'm after a smooth, creamy lead tone with my strat but still with dynamics such as pick attacks getting through.
I know this is extremely subjective to say in the least and that trying to describe tones with words is not easy but I'm interested to hear peoples opinions.
Thanks
Andrew
Which model plexi replica should I buy?

I would go with a 12 series if you have a good attenuator for the tones you describe
Mind you a 50w plexi clone of a 1987 (lead spec) are pretty close and slightly more manageable (tho' still need an attenuator!)

Re: Which model plexi replica should I buy?
Hey Neikeel,
Thanks for the reply. I must admit that I was leaning towards a 50w (1987).
Any particular year of 1987 that is similar to the 1200 series? Presumably year 1968?
Thanks

The preamp of a 1987 is the same as a 12 series between 68 and 72 ish, then there are subtle differences. Filtering is a smidge tighter on the 1987 than a 12 series.
If you get a Fischer (Lar/Mar) PPIMV fitted in one of the rear jacks that will help you go for browner sounds too.
Where in the world are you?
I might have one I made for sale

Re: Which model plexi replica should I buy?
Well in case anyone else has a similar question to what I had in my original post I ended up buying a 1959SLP from Neikeel and I'm very happy with the sound It's pretty much exactly what I was chasing. Guitar is a strat with single coils and the cab is a 2 x 12 closed back and I'm using an Alex Attenuator.
Neil hopefully might provide some more details on the exact specs but as I understand it he set it up as early 68 spec super lead on ch1 and more like a superbass on ch2. Though due to ghosting Neil has assisted me with upping the filtering more towards 69 spec.
Cheers
Andrew

Re: Which model plexi replica should I buy?
I initially went for '68 spec with early 70s C2373 OT instead of the stock C2668. Aiming for 68 tones.
820R/10uF on V1a
820R/0.68uF on V1b (as Andrew was using a Strat I wanted sl. more gain available)
820R/0.68uF on V2a
100pF ceramic on Vol 2 pot
'Parkhead mod' on Vol 1 pot with 100pF ceramic (fuller sound than stock)
stock 470k/470k/470pF mixers etc, 0.1uF presence
Mustard caps throughout 0.022uF (including V1b coupler to give full sound with strat)
Initially 32/32 preamp, 16 screens, 50 PI and 50 mains, upped to 32/32/32/100/50 to decrease ghosting

Roth and Malmsteen I am all over a 50, but Ulrich sounds like that with a fancy Hiwatt.
I like that amp Neil posted. 820 all around is good.
100 PI Neil? No poop?!!
