Source for Cab/Chassis/PTP Board

Post by hdahs » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:54 am

Im looking to build a Plexi 50 watt, following Georges instructions, including the trannies listed in the bill of materials

My question is, where can I find the cab/chassis & faceplates/ turretboard, that are all compatible with each other and the trannies on the BOM. I would rather not have to modify/drill to make these work together.

I work as an amp tech, so sourcing the small parts shouldnt be a problem. I've also notice on the web that the availability of plexi 50 kits is minimal compared to JTM45 or JCM800 kits. Am I missing something.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'd get the chassis and faceplates from ceriatone:

http://www.ceriatone.com/productSubPage ... lexi50.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The board from Brian H:

http://www.kurtsequipment.com/reproboards/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The cabinet from Mojotone:

http://www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/cabin ... ad-Cabinet" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And the transformers from Heyboer, the people that made George's trannies:

http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=34145" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Good luck!

Total newbie question, but if I bought the chasis, turret board, etc etc from the places you specified, can I still get the rest of the wiring, caps, etc from Metro?

I missed out on getting a kit before they discontinued them and I'd still like to give it a try.

Unfortuntely, no. Most of the stuff you need to source from somewhere else such as AES, Digikey, Mouser etc...

Good luck

Try http://Valvestorm.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; run by one of our members here . Should be able to get most of your components from there.

Thank you for the endorsement!

Yes, if you get a chassis and turret boards elsewhere, I can supply all the small hardware, wire and electronics parts. Just let me know what chassis you are using, and the amp spec (Lead, Bass, etc) that you would like to build.

Thanks guys. As the first poster said, I would attempt to use George's instructions (that are awesome!) that came with the kits. I downloaded it a few months ago to get a feel for the project.

It sounds like I would be able to get the parts I need through the vendors mentioned and then use the instructions and knock this thing out. Does that sound reasonable?

I have no amp building experience.

Thanks!

That is certainly reasonable. There are plenty of people here willing to help, and it sounds like valvestorm is going to make this even easier for you.

The valvestorm website filled in the missing blanks for hardware, trimmer pots etc. I want to get the board from Brian, but am I going to have to do some drilling for the board bolts, regardless of who I get the chassis from?

I was also trying to figure out if Metroamp board is compitable with other chassis suppliers like Ceriatone, Mojotone etc. Valvestrom is a nice addition and it looks like they have most of the parts needed for the kit. :)

I too have been very impressed by Valvestorm, he deserves to do well on my experience so far.

This chassis is pretty good (very versatile and remarkably cheap) but you need punches and tools to work it from scratch and it is in the UK.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Guitar-Amp-Chassi ... 3cb91fde22 I have used them a couple of times.

If you want an easy ride or want a JTM45 why not ask Steve M who is also a member here:
http://forum.metroamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=34975

Or Brian Wallace who is getting some 50w made up at the moment:
http://forum.marstran.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=358
He is also the man to buy transformers from too for authentic Marshall 50w tones :rock:

Suggest:
Trannies and chassis from Marstran
Board from BrianH
Parts from Valvestorm
Metroamp instructions (probably get the Metro loop and PPIMV kit at the same time).

ask nicely and you will get lots of help if you need it :thumbsup:

Hi, I'm new here and I'm going to be doing a similar build, my first, a 1967 spec JMP50 1986. I don't mean to hijack anyones thread, so I hope no one minds. Thanks neikeel for you last post, I didn't know that Brian Wallace was making some JMP50 chassis. That's pretty much the catalyst for me going forward with this project! Anyway, is Mojo the best source for a replica small box cab? I want the most genuine replica possible that I can build myself. Thanks.

I believe George used to source his head cabs from Mojo. You just have to spec what you want. I found them extremely helpful when I wanted a Trem sized cut out for my SIR#39 project. I told them that is was for a Metro flat front lipped cap (correct for pre '69) with correct shaped cut out on the front (some older ones had a larger radius on the front panel - like the first Marshall RIs of the JTM45 and 1987S in 1989 which looks weird IMO).
They have an offer at the moment too.......................

Thanks neikeel, I appreciate the responses. So no question, Mojo is the place to go for period correct head cabs? I'd like to eventually buy a Metropoulos 4x12 to go with the head and I want to make sure they match.
